so i've had this problem for a couple months now. when i drive, brakes or not, i hear a metal on metal rubbing sound coming from my front wheels. when i drive faster the sound goes faster and when i slow down, it slows down. almost like there's a spot on each rotor that they're catching on. i've had new rotors and pads put on twice and still no difference. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

... wonder if it is the tires themselves? It also could be a CV joint or wheel bearing :(

i have the stock tires on there and they are due to be changed. could that be my problem?

it could be the tires.... another thing it could be is the caliper. If the caliper doesn't retract itself right away it will cause the pads to rub

It is your tires rubbing on the thin edge of your wheels. There is a TSB about this all over the internet about 99-02 GA's. Replace the tires with something other than Goodyear Eagle RSA's and you are set.

Here is a link for your enjoyment http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1354

I had a hard time coming to grips with this explanation but if you pull of one of your wheels look at the edge where the tire meets the wheel. You will see it is white where it has rubbed off.

I had a similar problem with my 2001 GA. I needed new pads and the dealer qoted me $600 to replace the pads and turn the rotors. I went to my local mechanic and he did the job for $300. After the brakes were done the noise was still there. After rechecking the brakes with no success we changed to a different pad and the noise all but disappeared. Something about the metallic content of the pads used for the job. I was told that the GA's use an organic pad (whatever that means) and are not available in that style in a non-oem part yet.

GM's are notorious for the POS rotors. I turned mine and still they warped again. I put on power slots and no more rubbing noises.....

i think i might have the same problem on my car. its sounds like a medium pitched creaking sound that speeds up and slows down along with the car. also when i press my brake pedal that craks a bit too. is this the same problem? i have inspected my rotors and they look free of wear but i can't tell if they are warped..i mean..i'm no mechanic!!

if you've got the Goodyear tires, that may be the problem. i had the same problem a couple months ago on my 01 GA 3400. i call it, the 'vwhom, vwhom' tire noise. i changed the brakes, and the rotors(after reading much about the notorious warping rotors), but still the noise was there. turned out to be a bad front left wheel bearing, and i have 46k miles on her. i purchased the wheel bearing assembly for $90us, replaced it myself, and avoided the $665 the shop wanted, to replace BOTH bearings.

I wonder if this is my problem also. I had horrible rubbing creeking noises coming from what I thought to be bad rotors, 32,000 on stock ones.

So I changed them to new crossdrilled rotors and new pads all around, noise is still there? I have not rotated my tires, and plan on doing that and did not notice any signs of ribbing on tires/wheels when we took them off to change the rotors and pads... I just used oem style pads with crossdrilled rotors... cause the carbon metaalic ones were on backorder and wanted to change them at the mod day..

Oh and it seems to only make noise when I am slowing down going straight or when I am making a right turn.. left turns have virtually no noise...

HELP the noise is driving me nuts!!!!

Denise :)

does the noise only occur when you're applying brakes? the noise my bearing made was a fairly consistent grinding sound, but you could only hear it going straight or making wide left turns. it was such an annoying sound on the freeway. oh, and i remember only hearing the sound above about 25mph.

No the noise occurs whether braking or not, and only straight and turning right. I usually only hear it at lower speeds cause my SLP makes it hard to hear when going higher...

I am going to maybe take it into the dealer and see what they have to say about it.. hoefully whatever is the problem will be covered under warranty.. hopefully!
