ok so recently i installed a custom cai....the check engine light is on but i guess thats cause the sensor isnt in too well....so my car is in D, im not pushing on any gas....and the rpms is going up to 1 and sometime a bit more than that and it comes down....so its kinda like my car jumps a little....jumps...goes to normal...jumps....goes to normal....what the hell is up w/ that??? like im braking and it feels like someone is pushin the gas pedal at the same time sometimes.....and when i press on the gas it jumps....like the response is a lot faster when i touch the gas....is that good or bad?....my friend says that many american cars just do that....anyways anyone know what the deal is...??

"american cars just do that"

LOL, no, your friends an idiot. Make sure the IAT sensor is in there and that the tip is not touching the inside wall of the pipe, then disconnect the negative terminal of the battery for just a second and let the computer build a new fuel map. If it still does it check the MAF and the IAC valve. Also, I don't know if you've messed with it or not, but check the throttle cable, the spring loaded thing it wraps around, and the throttle position sensor.

Also, in the troubleshooting section of the Haynes manual under "Engine Surges While Holding Accelerator Steady", the first thing it says to check is for a intake air leak

ok so i guess its probably an intake leak...cause the sensor isnt all the way in....its kinda loose....

... if it 'worked' properly before and now it doesn't, chances are that the problem is with the CAI or your installation ... put it back to factory (or the way it was when it worked) and see what happens :)

You have a Leak after the butterfly in the throttle body. Thats why the computer is going in to Hunt Mode. See if you can find info on it. basically it means the the computer can no longer control or correctly set the flow of air/fuel going in to the motor.

So it starts this RPM this where it goes High, craps out for a few seconds then catches again. Goes high craps so on and so on.
The computer is hunting for a fuel/air mixture that make other censors happy. Because of the air leak is most lickely after the butterfly. It is also after all AIC kind of stuff, so its not controlable.

retighten all the clamps you palyed with to get the CIA in. You left some thing loose. But it's something after the butterfly in the throttle body. Making your search area Much Smaller.

Good Luck. Listen for a sucking sound like a small hole in a straw.

OOh yea, About your friend, Better check the lungs after he changes a tire for you. He might think all tire should onyy be tightened a little bit. So you can take them off eayser next time J/k.

The surge is computer controled so it is not stopable by you. except by using the brakes...
