I'm hoping this is the only problem i'm gonna run into concerning the Ecotec engine but here goes.....

July 2nd on my way to work (5.30am) my car dies so i get it towed to the dealership i deal with. With them being so busy they don't get around to looking at it till 1pm. When they do they finally figure out after 3hrs of looking at it they discover the timing chain broke. They order a new one, install it and still the car won't run. After further inspection they discover the head needs to me machined and rebuilt. The machine shop calls thje dealership and say's the head isn't fixable. So now the dealership has ordered me a new head.

what caused your problem I have not heard of a single person with the ecotec engine going through a timing chain yet. and thats including the people who have the L-Series saturns that were made in 99

To my knowlege the dealership has no idea what-so-ever on what would cause the timing chain to go so fast or at all for that matter.

Looks like the car has to go back to be looked at as now i get a high pitched whine and as i accelerate to sound gets higher. Comparable to if you get "noise" coming though some ill-installed door speakers

Sent you my vin # shawn. zipnsip I do have a weird whine in my engine that you can hear at slow speeds. You would have thought if this effects my car they would have done it last time they had my car......But im at 31,000 miles so I have to make sure everything is done before I go out of warranty. Thanks for the heads up

I have the noise same in my 02 Grand AM with 50k on it. It's often disturbing, but I always think about how small the engine actually is. Most of the time, i hear it at low speeds when i barely touch the accelerator. Based on the previous service bulletin, it seems that this is a normal characteristic of a 2.2 L Ecotec. Is this for sure? Or is there something ELSE wrong with my car?
