hello everyone, im new to the boards, but i'll be stoppin by often

the story:

ok, i personally do not own a grand am, my girlfriend does, and this whole problem has actually brought her to tears. im tryin to find out everything i can to help her out, since this is her first 'new' car, so she has a dying passion to keep it alive as long as possible.

she got her 95 LE from a new car dealership that also had used cars, and this was one of em. he said the car had never been in an accident, never had major engine problems, was good as new, only had about 55k miles. the warrantee from the dealership was 1 yr, or up to 100k miles (so 45k miles). well, that warrantee went up about a year ago.

2 months after the warrantee ended, a loud rattling noise was comin from her timing chain case, so we drove it to her uncles house, about 40 mile trip. along the way, her timing chain came loose, the retainer spring was gone, and so it was basically a chainsaw thru her engine....shattered a piston, cracked the block, cam was gone. after a new engine, out in and paid for by her uncle, her car was back on the road.

not even 2 months later, the exact same thing, only we recognized the sounds, so we parked it before it could tear itself apart again. towed it to the local pontiac dealership, and they said it was the chain again, but there was no warrantee...after 1300 in labor and parts, and a week in the shop, it was back on the road, but this time with a 3k mile/ 30 day warrantee.

last week, the exact same thing happened. familair sounds, poor driving, etc. so we took it to the dealership again, because it was still under the warrantee, had only been 2 weeks. they said it wasnt the timing chain, but the valves...they couldnt say exactly without taking it apart, which would be $700....so her uncle paid for it, and it was the chain loose, AND i think it was an unseated valve or loose valve spring or something, where the engine would need replaced AGAIN...

it will cost $4000 for a new engine, besides labor to have the car running again. she still owes $4300 to the bank for her car loan to get the car, and its $208/month, besides $115 for insurance. the book value of the car (if running) is only 3800...she cant sell it because of the loan, and she must have tags and insurance on the car, even if its not moving, because of the loan. tags are coming up in next month. so far, she owes her uncle about $6000, but she has a very nice (and somewhat wealthy) family, so hes not really sweating it. so heres my question -

would it be worth fixing and driving, and this possibly happening again, or just let it sit and ride out the payments? i dunno if this is a common problem for this engine, i heard somewhere they only made it for 3 yrs (but thats unreliable source).

any advice would be appreciated

OK, first off it's not an LE if it's a '95. '92 on the only trim levels are SE and GT, and the engine is not a 2.5L, but a 2.3L. Dang, and I thought I had engine problems... Well there are other sources for engines, www.mantapart.com is one where you can get one less than GM, but you could also maybe find a rebuilder in your area which would be even less costly. Sounds like the most recent problem could have been a result of their work also if I'm understanding it correctly. It's certainly not common for the number of problems you've had. Also the engine was made from back in the late 80s thru '95. 1995 is kind of an oddball year because it was the transition from the 2.3 Quad4 to the 2.4 TwinCam so it offers a few extra challenges like the Power steering setup. Also it has the '96-'98 suspension on it.

It really sounds to me like they messed up when they did the last work for you. I'd suggest maybe talking to an attorney if they won't back their work.

sorry bout the confusion on the year/model  ive drove the car for a while, but its my girlfriends, so i dont know the exact specs on it (maybe i shoulda looked into it before posting on a g.a.-pro's bb :angel2: ) but your right on the SE, probly on everything

yeh, we live in a somewhat small town in Kansas, so theres nobody that would rebuild an engine newer than about 1985 within about 75mi radius (besides her uncle), and her uncle wants something with a warrantee.

isnt there an engine for g.a. they only built for 3 yrs, or was the guy pullin my leg?

thx for your help fish :)

You may want to got to to C panel and change your car info. The two engines available for the shortest time were the 3.3L V6 and the 2.0L turbo I4. The Quad4 was made for 7-8 years and the 2.5L was available for 6-7 years. Well if you can't find a rebuilder close you may wanna surf around the net and see what you can find. I still think you need to butt heads with the dealer and try to get them to cover it. GM district service manager may be another angle to go. You may find a parts store around there that can supply you with something. I know O'Riellys has quoted motors around $1800 and they are know as Hi/Lo in some states. Scott (FBOD) send me this link from a place in Canada that seemed to have great prices but not sure what freight and/or customs duty would do to it: http://www.crosstownengines.com/CrosstownEnginePrices.htm
I'll bet you can find some other options if you search around a bit.

nother thing, i found out its a '97, notta 95

ive been lookin round those sites, and searchin google for stuff, but havent really come up with anything realistic (small town, small possibilities). i was talkin with her about all this, and then she told me her uncle is gonna save her butt (again). hes gonna buy it from her just enough to pay off her loan, then hes gonna fix it and trade it in while its still mobile.

thx again for all your help! :)

OK, well if that's the case, it's not a 2.3 motor either, but a 2.4 TwinCam. Well best of luck at any rate...
