View Full Version : Oh great... this is what my machine shop did.

I am in the midst of rebuilding a 1991 LG0 engine.

I bought it with knocking rods... after removal and dissasembly of the short block one could only guess as to how long it was being driven with a bad head gasket (and water in the crankcase). Oh, the head was cracked in at least four spots.

First my machine shop put in an order for the appropriate LG0 pistons, only to recieve LD2 pistons. As a result of a miscommunication, they proceeded to finalize the machining to the exact tolerances of the LD2 pistons recieved.
FYI: I am informed that the the LG0 piston should have a .15" dish and the LD2 piston has a .16" dish (less the valve reliefs on both accounts).

Second, the block required a .005" (I think) milling.

I did initially have concerns about messed up geometry for the timing chain housing, but that has subsided.

After speaking with Mantapart, I am resuming a search for a good head (#753/303).

Since I have not yet aquired the head I am to use, I can only presume that it will not be milled (since this would keep the combustion chamber the largest).

Does anyone have any thoughts on my scenario?

Would anyone out there be worried about anything?

I am accustomed to dealing with the good-old V8's which reside between a musclecar's fenders, so the comparitive exacting science that is required for some of the newer high output 4 cylinders... is a little daunting.

I would tell your machine shop to get rid of the LD2 pistons because your LGO's run on a 10:1 compression and the LD2's utilize a 9:5 Try to opt for an 086 head if you can. Get a good port and polish job done on the head and you won't be dissapointed with the results.
