well putting a 3.8 sc engine in there would be sweet but alot of work. your looking at 5000+ easily. you need tranny, computers, rewire the whole car, just fitting that engine in your car, custom hood that is higher to allow clearance for the SC, ect....its just keeps addin up.
as for the quad 4 im not to sure.....but i havent heard of one that comes 180hp stock. made one with a turbo. i dont know alot about the different 4 bangers out there but some one else will beable to help you with that.

mmm....try the w-41!!! Someone I know had that in a '95 GASE and it had nice take off. It got up to 80 in no time. It's supposed to have more power than the HO.

The 3800 swap would be cool as seeing that Eaton blower sitting inside a Grand Am engine bay would really turn heads but....
I would go with the Q4 HO any day of the week. For starters, your front/rear balance is going to suffer a lot. at least with the Q4 HO, balance will be the same. Like others said, there are plenty of mods available for the Q4. I would rather have a Q4 with a Garrett T3 or T3/T04 hybrid over a GTP engine. Last but not least, I would enjoy the gas mileage advantages over the 3800.
I have seen similar topics come up on the Escort GT list about putting Contour DOHC 2.5L engines or even Probe GT 2.5L DOHC engines in an Escort GT. The responses are the same. It can be done, but not without heavy modifications and a heavier drain on your wallet!! :D They all recommend either a J-spec GTX or the even rarer GTR (assuming you can even get one) engine or turbocharging the N/a 1.8.
Of course, it is your car and your money. But I, as well as most of the other members, feel there would be far less headaches for equivalent HP gains from a Q4 HO swap.

Wasnt the W41 specific to the Cutlass Calais only? I want to say it was, but am not sure. Yeah, the W41 would be the one to have above the 180HP HO, but if one has to look forever to get the W41, may as well get the HO and bring it up to W41 power levels.

Don is right. It would be much more cost efficient to go with the quad4HO. And the W41 (190hp) was available in the Calais BUT also in the 92-93 Achieva SCX. It will be much easier to find a HO (180hp). Below are the years and models of cars that the HO came standard.
All Chevy Beretta GTZ
89-91 Pontiac Grand Am SE
92-94 Pontiac Grand Am GT
94 Oldsmobile Achieva SC
I may have missed some or the years may be off a little but I am sure some one here can clear it up if I am wrong.

I never knew that a quad4 had that much power. What kind of torque do they produce? WTF does that 4 banger make more hp than my V-6.

HOs produce 165 Ft/lbs. and LOs average about 155 ft/lbs.

I have a 5 speed in my Quad 4. I can get to 60 in NO TIME still in 2nd gear.
I jump on the freeway in 3rd at 70 all the time @ 5 grand. Car yellows at 63 grand and reds at 68 grand.
Yes stock per stock, a Quad 4 can beat Most 6 cylinder cars.
I also get about 26 miles per gallon around town. Between the two it's hard little motor to beat.
