I have a 99 grand am SE....it has been shakn while in idle...and occasionly cutting off...so i assumed it was probaly a 0xygen cencor problem...but when i took it to the shop and he ran the diagnostic machine on it...he said it didnt show any problems,,but i recently found out that when i bought the car (3,000 miles ago)... it didnt have an air filter in it...so he thinks my Egm? valv is clogged and says if i pay him $150 bucks he'll clean it....what do you guys think?

Do you have a 3100 or a 3400? Not that it really matters both engines have pretty much the same set up.

Anyway, Yes your EGR could have a lot of carbon build up in the passages from the EGR valve to the intake. A $150 is a reasonable price for the labor involved. The problem could also be a dirty throttle body. If your mechanic cleans the EGR passages, I would hope he will pull the throttle body at the same time and clean it as well.
