View Full Version : New custom 2 piece CAI

I made one or these up for a friend a few months ago out of Aluminized Mandrel Header pipe and wanted to make one for myself to replace the 3 piece I made. I wanted to wait until I could get some polished aluminum mandrel. Sweetalero was kind enough to sell me one of his uncut pipes and I slapped it together tonite.

Just 2 pieces, one in the engine bay and one in the fender well. It whistles alot more than my 3 piece did.....I guess it must just flow a little smoother.

Looks real nice, good job. You get alot cooler air at the fender than under the hood. I need one that goes under the fender, can't find one.

I should have one made for the 2.4 in a few weeks or so. I found a nice 99 GA for my daughter with a 2.4 and a 5 speed in it. I'll start modding it for her as soon as I get it.

I'll get to do all of the things I would like to do to mine......but I'm just a little too old to be driving a lowered car with 17s and neons :)

Do you know of any places online to buy the cold air kits for under the fender, or adapters?

if anyone wants just pipe ($100)...... or a fully cut ready to bolt in CAI for $150 lemme know. the 2 piece design flows better than all the other cai's that are 3 piece

not for the 2.4....someone may be able to tell you, but I think they're scarce

That looks good. Did you see a diffence in performance?

You say u made it yourself. How hard was it? What all did you need? and How much did it all cost?

Sweet just quoted you a price on the pipe. I've made quite a few of them up so it's easy for me. Gotta tell you.....if you've never done it, $150 for him to get it ready to bolt up is a pretty good deal.

is the MAF to close to the TB?

SweetAlero99

nope thats where the maf is supposed to be. its connected to the throttle body with a coupler.

it looks good, and cheap. i might get 1. the 3400 uses the 3 inches, so is the 2.5 inche for the I4? what about the sensor holes. are they pre-made?

Nice work Tom.I would ask you to make one for my 2.4 if i hadn't bought SpyHunteR's AEM one.

my website need to be updated. the pipe is actually like 2.75 or some weird size..... but it performs awsome..... just ask theoldguy..... infact he is a believe like me..... the its actually better than the 3"....... but its such a small difference in size it doesnt really matter..... ur engine is already suckin in way more air than it knows what to do with....... right tom.

but ya comes will all the sensor holes and everything. u just bolt it up.

I've seen 2 cars with 2 1/2" pipe and Sweet's with the 2 3/4" and to be honest, I actually think they pull harder than the 3" tubing.

There's not much sense in me going to a smaller tube since my MAF is aftermarket and the bore is actually a little over 3". Brent's car runs very close to mine.....in fact the other nite every one of his ETs were lower (except for one, but we won't talk about that will we Brent??) ..... I'll get him next week!!! :D

Themeneea - I've had the MAF out farther away from the throttle body, but my MAF doesn't have a screen so the farther away from the bend in the tube I can get it, the better. The disruption of the air coming off the bend drives the sensor crazy!

The Old Guy.

Do you really feel much power increase??

I started a thread a while back wondering if you really can feel a differance. I have read a few threads where people think they can. But they also had a dirty air filter before they swapped over. Kind of like your saying the other day about plugs. If the old ones where shot, then of course you feel more power with new ones, wether there better or not.

Carb's have there air/fuel mixtures and my Quad has a IVAC witch restrict or DECIDEs how much air will get in. So given that I know the car ( or I belive I know) is not getting that much more air, I've never seen a Dino on a box to prove the CAI helps.

I just figure, you have been around long enough and are Old Guy enough to know if it really helps. I have a hard time understanding they can.

Kind of like cards on Valintines day. Is it all comercials and the bussness mind telling us we need to or there better.

By the way, it looks nice in there, you did a good job.

In comparison to the stock box and all of the restrictive plastic crap we have in the fender , it's definately an improvement. Can I "feel" the difference? You know, I have to be honest and say it takes a lot for me to really feel anything. I've been fooled way too many times into thinking a mod made may car run better only to go to the track and be a lot slower, so I don't trust my seat of the pants dyno.....or anyone else's.

Here's the only real proof I have but there's no dyno to back it up.
My gas mileage improved about 2 MPG with the CAI. Bone stock my best time that really counts (I have a really low run that's a fluke) is a 15.96, but with just exhaust and CAI I've run 15.6's.

As far as the A/F mixture, it's not that the CAI draws more air, but cooler air. So the the air is denser. You know the drill....denser = more molecules. More molecules = better ignition of fuel. I do know that's true because look how much better our cars run on a cool night.

My honest opinion is that's it's better than the stock box, but not perfect by any means. Unfortunately the design of the engine bay and the engine being transverse with the throttle body coming from the side, restricts us from doing anything that would be a vast improvement.

Just a note....being "The Old Guy" doesn't make me any smarter....it just means I've had more time to screw up!! :D

Well.....sit tight because I'll have a ton of questions for you very soon. I'm in the process of getting my daughter her first car. A 99 GA SE with a 2.2 and 5 speed.

I've never owned a car with less than 6 cylinders!!! I'm clueless!!

Well, I'm only a few years behind you, which means I've made a few mistakes to learn from also. But I don't think I could get a honest opnion from a younger person. Well, maybe a none rose colored glasses opnion that I might get from younger folks.

All I know is my sewing machine will eat Lots of V6 Looms. You know, big over sized sewing machines with too many spark plug wires, threaded through all the Air polution crap.

The only Air Polution crap on mine is a o2 censor. Part of why when I left my hood and look in side, it dosn't look like R2D2 thru-up in it.
