That would be a very expensive project. The 3.4DOHC was never meant to fit in the 97 GA. For starters you will have to have custom motor and tranny mounts. Custom drive axles. And a lot of customer computer and harness work.
You would be be getter off dropping a 3400 engine in. It is doable and it has been done.

I am currently doing a 3.4L DOHC swap into my 96 GT GA. I had the 2.4L stock, which means the transmission must be replaced also. If you have a V-6 stock in your GA, then teh engine will bolt right in!!! YOu will then need to fabricate a front engine mount, exhaust (Mine runs a Garrett T-3) and the computer harness. This is an amazing engine as far performance...and the tuning possiblities are vast. (Especially since the cams are not fixed to the cam gears, thus allowing you to change cam timing for both in take, and exhaust independantly. Thus allowing you to add or subtract overlap to say bleed off excessive cylinder pressure due to turbo or high compression) My engine is nearly complete, having preformed a complete rebuild. My GA had teh 2.4 like I said, and I must swap the transmission. If you get a 3.4L DOHC try to get the transmission and the harness/computer with it. The transmission used with the 3.4L DOHC is the same as the one in the V-6 GA so it will bolt in. Thus allowing stock axles to be retained. The only problem area I have found so far is with exhaust...there is not much room with the automatic to run the headpipe (Down pipe for you Sport Compact readers) between the transaxle and the firewall. I have the option of going maual..I found one in a cavalier for $200 will all the linkages and accys. But I'm not building this car to race. I just wanted a quick show car. Something to show off the work we do here at the shop. (I have a custom shop in Wa.) Let me know if anyone has any ?'s on this swap...I have not completed it but..it is close! :)
