Hey guys... my 94SE is in good shape and has a new tranny... but the engine just hit 240 KM and to be honest I run the piss out of it....
Anyway... I figure I should be able to get at least another 40-60K KM's out of her... But I would like to have a spare engine I can put in if/when I eventually blow this one up...
I would also like more power out of her.... so the plan is to find another engine that needs rebuilding and do it myself, hopefully adding some preformance parts...
I beleive they are 175 hp stock... do you guys think 220hp on somewhat of a budget is wishfull thinking ?
Assuming I get the engine cheap, what kind of parts should I be looking at adding, and how much should the whole project cost ??
I want to do this all myself... I don't have *ANY* experience rebuilding an engine... but I have a shop, tools, and I know a few mechanics who might be able to help me out here and there...
I would also be changing the engine out myself when it's done... BTW...
Anyone know of a manual that would take me through everything step by step ?

are you talking about a 3100? stock they are 155hp

ya it's a 3100... I didn't know there was a difference between that and the 3.1....
I guess the 3100 has different cams, and manifold/heads...
Mantapart says the 3100 has 20hp over a stock 3.1
155 is disapointing though....

that's it, the 3100 has only a big 155 hp, kinda sucky ain't it. I think anything is possible. If you have the cash to buy a new engine and rebuild it you can get the hp you want. Just take your time, have everything ported and polished, get a performance cam, heads, plus you can clean it like it is new and it will have brand new clean fluids in it, you can always get an supercharger for it too. If it isn't in the car you don't have to really about down time working on it. You can also get another computer programmed to the vin and send it to ase for them to put their chip on. You could do a whole lot with a spare engine mainly because you can still drive your car so you don't have to rush things cause you don't have to worry about having the work done so you can drive the car.

Mantapart is right, insofar as the old 3.1 MPFI engine only made 135bhp, and 95-up GAs have 155bhp.
But, up to 95, the 3100 made 160bhp at the flywheel - it lost 5bhp due to OBDII regulations. From 95 up they put 155bhp to the flywheel in GAs, but 99 and up 3100s in other GM models were boosted to 170bhp due in large part to new upper and lower intake manifolds.
I'd look for a 99+ wrecked Malibu, Monte Carlo or GP for this motor. An ASE reprogram will take that engine to ~195bhp, a cat-back exhaust will eek out another 5-6bhp - those two together take you just over 200 at the flywheel.
From there, a proper cold-air intake, a TB, and (when they are finally released) the S&S Headers should take you the rest of the way to your goal of 220bhp.
(As far as the headers go, if you don't want to wait, the set that both S&S and TOG make for the 3400 WILL FIT the 3100.)

Well im not disappointed in the 155hp because the tourqe is 185lb per square inch and that is the real acting force.
I guess to get a point across im just gonna have to shut up for awhile and one day come on with my dino pictures and some movies of my car.

This might be a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway. Would the intake manifolds from a newer 3100 fit on a '97 3100?

Yes, as long as you get both upper and lower intake manifolds. There has been some talk about doing that but I dont know if anyone has done it yet or not. I believe there will be some minor problems that will arise, I'll find a thread for you that has more details. This would be a great mod because you wont be able to port out the older 3100 manifold anywhere near the newer ones and you could probably find them at a junk yard for a cheap price and you would just have to pay mainly for the labor. I think you might have to get the newer TB too since they are 4 mm bigger I believe. One thing Im looking into and researching more is getting the APOC TB and intake manifold for the 3400 and putting it on my 3100. That should be a nice gain, huh.

Did you have any luck finding a thread on this?

No sorry, it must have been on another message board. I think it might either be on gmpowertalk or 60degreeV6, I'll try to get it

Well I remembered who it was. Its bszopi on both gmpowertalk and 60degreeV6 (he is a moderator on that board) so you can check it out and email him about it. He has a 94 3100 Beretta with newer 3400 manifold (which is the same as the newer 3100 manifold)
I found it on 60degreeV6 http://discussions.gmforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=31863&pagenumber=1

I'm just researching the project right now. If I do change out the top end, I'll do a post or something.
Thanks for the help!
