yea with a stick this car shoudl be able to burn at least a 15.5-15.9 the gearing in the 3300 is what makes it so damn slow.

{GAguy} "yea with a stick this car shoudl be able to burn at least a 15.5-15.9 the gearing in the 3300 is what makes it so damn slow. "
On that note are there any other tranny's that were used for the 3300 maybe in a buick or something, maybe it would give better gear ratio

The only tranny that ive heard can be bolted up is from a sunbird.... this is what ive heard let me know if this is false.
graden

nope ... totaly true.. pritty much all 85 to 93 g.m product that had a 3 speed ( no over drive) auto will bolt up. The last time i did a tranny r&r we had a 3300 buick and used a sunbird 2.2 tranny. lol she toped out pritty quick but to get there was nothing

Now, i also heard you could bolt up a 3.0L standard tranny from a sunbird would that be the same as the auto?
graden

thats what im workin on right now. but you will find NO fly wheel that will bolt up... you need to get 1 custom made.

the tranny in the sunbird and cavaliers are the same as the ones they use on that grand am however they are geared a little different. Im pretty sure that the one on our grand ams are the best gear set there is for the 3 speed auto.

Sunbird and cav trannys were better from the 2.0 & 2.2 . the torque converters had a higher stall speed. smaller engine better gearing.

09-17-2003, 04:17 PM
thats wierd I was told that the tranny was modified through its gearing in order to be able to fit different motors and the larger the motor the better the gears because the trans needed to be able to withstand the torque given from the engine. Maybe I am wrong but wouldnt they want to make a tranny stronger for a bigger motor?
graden
09-18-2003, 09:49 AM
quality wise.... the bigger motor got a better tranny. but as for smaller gearing.. the smaller motors got smaller gearing to excelerate faster and keep up in trafic. so if you take a big motor and pair it up to a smaller tranny.. getting to 90 mph is easy.. but after that, you have no gearing left to hit higher speeds. smaller motor with big tranny, lots of top end speed... if you ever get there

yeah I suppose your right, thats why I was curious if they used the four speed auto because you would have a little better gearing allowing you to climb in speed quickly and still have some top end speed. A shift kit would help but I heard that these trannys dont hold up to that kind of abuse unless you completely redesign the band and clutch packs so they can take more abuse.

if you grab a tranny from a lumina z34 or regal grand sport thay have the 3 speed with over drive. much better than our 3 speed autos.

I got one for sale if anyone is interested, make an offer. its off a lumina euro 3.4 same engine tranny as the z34 only a four door version of the car. Located in Ct.

Well its more of a what had i done to not get banned than a what did I do specifically. It seems that I didnt participate enough in class. and I cant seem to get along well with others. SO I guess I got the perverbial boot.

i don't think that the grand am is really a 3speed it seems to have a phantom gear in the transmissions
if u press the gas peddel lightly from a stop you will hit second gear between 15-20 MPH
then 3rd at like 25-30
and all the sudden at like 45 MPH the RPM's will go from 2000 down to 1500 RPM and u do not feel a shift
does n e one else notice that?????

that would be the torque converter lock up.

well i had my tranny re bulit about 9 mths ago... the guy who did it played with it alittle. he did somthing to make it shift a bit harder. as for 1/4 mile time. 16.7 is my best. the car is getting tired so i dont think it will see the track again. :( as for as mods i have a bigger fule pump, cold air, dynomax muffler.

I have to disagree... The 3300 did come with a 3T40 but not all trans are the same. My buick has a different gear ratio than my GAGT. There is a Identifier code located on the top of the trans near the safety neutral switch.
Instead of the 4t40 u should use the 4t60 for the fact that the Olds Cutlass which also had the 3300v6 was fitted with a 4t60 transmission. The GM 4t60 trans is the same as the 3t40 with the exeption of the overdrive.
This is taken from http://www.pontiacserver.com/ratios.html
1974 - 1978 - THM-125 (3T40)
1980 - 1983 - THM-440T4 (4T60) - Four speed version of THM-125. Some parts
identical or very similar. Somewhat stronger than THM-125.
PS if you want to know your exact gear ratio let me know I have a list from my GM factory manual for the 3t40 trans

Cutlasses had the 3300?? i didnt know that, well, the 4T60's have somekind of limit so it can only go 128, on my TGP the overdrive doesnt allow the car to go past 128, for some odd reason, its not a limiter from the chip either. That may just be with the TGP's, they had the 4T60-HD, mabye get one of those, so if u ever do forced induction, ur trann can handle it
BTW - My mom had a 92 GASE 3300, my sister and her friend drove it, she said the thing was really fast, went to 60 in like 7 seconds, my dad said whoever had it be4 us put cutsom exhaust, headers and a few other things. I liked our 4 door family car, had American Racing Rims on it, i loved it, too bad she sold it, i woulda loved to have it, got great gas mileage
