Hey guys,

For a while now, my car has been making noise (coming from the power steering pump) and its louder when I turn. It seems to drink a little bit of fluid, not much really though. But I am going to replace it now. Has anyone done this before??? Its not going to be a problem for me to pull the pump off, I just want to know if I need to bleed the lines or anything like that. Any help is appreciated.

On a side note, my AC hasnt worked for a long time and now the pulley is making a slight squeeeeeeeeek sound so Im just going to run a belt thats smaller. Has anyone done this before?

Thanks guys!

Quick diagnosis would be you have a PS pump that is "on the way out" but it is also possible the fluid itself is old meaning that once it is replaced, the pump will quiet down :)

Bob;

Here is a link to the procedure for changing the power steering pump on your car: PS Pump Replacement (http://www.cybrrpartspro.com/Chilton%20Manuals/9106m/9106CH08_25.HTML) .

Before you do this, first do what the illustrious 99grandamse has suggested. Suck the fluid out of the resevior with a Poultry Baster and refill it with power steering fluid conditioner. The conditioner will lubricate your seals and bearings in the Power steering system. It may cure the noise. If it does, then you just saved youself some money. If not then replace the pump.

if its leaking it might not be the pump, my pressure hose was leakking and I got it fixed and it worked well.

Ok thanks guys, I am going to go to NAPA in the morning and get some LUCAS for the ps pump. Now I just gotta get my radiator fixed...

Ok guys, I used the turkey baster this morning and did the extract and replacement with the lucas stuff so we will see. It sounds a little bit quieter, but I think I have to add a little bit more yet. Its not that big of a deal, a new ps pump is $47.

Well, its been a while since I put the Lucas in. Funny thing is... the car never leaked ps fluid before (not in visible spots on the ground). Last Saturday I went out to my car to find a huge puddle... of what? Power steering fluid... and keep in mind this is right after I put in the "guaranteed to stop leaks" Lucas. LOL. So, I filled it yet again with Lucas and its not leaking now, but making an assload of noise... and I hate it. Im gonna change it hopefully this week sometime.
