First thoughts: WOW! Like I said to someone else. They make my old Infinity 60.5cs sound like something off the shelf at Radio Shack. I thought I would be daring and move my tweeters from the sail panels to the door panels (1.75" holes in highly visible areas scare me). Moving them really help out the imaging and the JBL tweeters are so much smoother than the Infinitys. I always thought they were too harsh.

I dunno why, but I keep calling the JLs Audio "JBL". My home theater has JBLs , maybe thats why.

You must have nerves of steel to cut holes in the door panels like that though! :nervous: I have to admit, the end result looks lik eit's worth the risk. :) Just FYI, the factory blank sail panels are less than $5 each at the dealership.

I've been hearing alot of good about JL component systems since I picked up mine. Unfortunately I don't have anything to power them with since 99% of my system is sold.
By the end of next month I hope to have my new Alpine v12 amps in along with some other goodies so I hope to finally see what the JL 3way component system(XR 653-CS) can do.

You call it nerves of steel, I call it more balls than brains. :P
I debated for a good long time about it and once I realized that the JL tweets wouldn't fit in the sails like my Infinities did, I felt I had less of a choice. I just lined it up, closed my eyes and drilled away! Wait... what are we talking about here???
You happen to know the part number for the blank sails particularly for the pewter interior? (I think thats what it is :P )
Now that I think about it, I need the passenger side kickpanel/door sill piece, same color, I bet nobody has that part#. :P I got a little rough with it while taking it out to run wires and cracked it about 75% through. :(

how hard would it be to change over the the stock 4x6 to a 6.5, since I am going Boston 3 way, and will need to convert the space... any brands or part #'s ?

All you need is something to cut metal with (to open up the stock hole a bit), a drill for mounting holes, screws for those holes, and a 1" spacer(metra makes them, Part # 82-3300) , or a 3/4" one made from MDF.
I'm probably missing something...

How does the door panel fit on after the spacer? I'm looking to do an Infinity Kappa Perfect 5.1 or 6.1 install and I was curious as to how the speaker depth is going to affect the install.

i missed this one all together, dont know how, but i did. anyways, came out looking good. that's the same place emily's tweeters are mounted for her components. didn't think i'd like it at first, but it turned out pretty good

so your tweeters arent blocked by your knees? i actually like the higher sound stage in the sail panels.
nice install on your "jbl" speakers. LOL i hear that confusion all the time at work, "hey, do you carry the JBL w7 subs?" i always say no. we dont carry JBL. LOL.

Wow... thread back from the dead. :D Dave, yeah, I dunno why I do that but I do know the difference. :P The soundstage doesn't sound low to me at all it sounds proper, with the tweeters in the sails they sound too separated from the 6.5s.
The tweeters swivel and tilt, so they can be aimed almost directly at ear level. I even have the crossovers set at -6db and the tweeters pointing straight out and its still plenty of highs for me.
As for clearance for the door panel... its tricky... one inch spacers were too much to make it even remotely possible, without any spacer the magnet hit the window rail inside the door, so I managed to find a 1/2 inch spacer and there still wasn't really clearance for the driver behind the door panel. So I put a piece of foam rubber alongside the 6.5 that stuck out a bit farther than the travel of the driver, so the panel goes on tightly, but has just enough clearance so the cone doesn't hit it at any volume.
It all depends on the depth of the speaker.

what do you have powering those components???

I have the JL 3-wa components up front in my Grand Am and I love them. I was told that the tweeters don't really like to scream too much, and its best to have the x-overs set at least -3dB. Also haven't had anyproblems with my tweets.....
I have Infinity components up front in my Cherokee, and they seem to be a little more effecient than th JL's but I love the way both sound in the different vehicles.
