I don't understand this. Grand Am is Pontiac's biggest seller and they get rid of the name. But the part I don't understand is are they totaly getting rid of the grand am or just changing the name. I would think changing the name would be basicly getting rid of it wouldn't you think? New name, new designe, what the hell would be the same?

Basically they are just dumping the Grand Am all together and starting fresh with a totally new car, and new name for Pontiacs new image.

I thought it was just a name change like the 626 went to the 6. G6 is just like grand am its just missing 6 letters

wait, I just thought of the connection, the 626 became the Mazda 6, Grand Am will become G6, rand Am is 6 letters, so its just a shortened G-rand Am

Oh wow I never thought of that. I heard the '6' came from the engine thats gonna be in it. Your connection makes sense though, good job :)

I thought the 6 was for the 6th generation of the GA, but I'm not certain.

Aren't they moving off the N-body platform altogether? The three platforms I've loved most F, P (Fiero) and N all get the axe. :???:

yes they are moving off the n-body platform thats not a bad thing though. The N-body served its purpose but the platform is becoming outdated. Most of GM's vehicles are going through or have goen through in the last year a platform change. Saturn switched from their own platform to GM's global platforms. The cavalier and sunfire are all moving to delta the grand am was only the next on the ladder of progression.
I'm going to agree with shawn I always though that the G6 stood for generation G meaning the grand am itself lives on but in a newer generation. As someone else kinda like how mazda changed the 626 which i think is a boring name to the mazda 6. But I always liked the name grand am......But all things change eventually

Grand Am is prononced "Grande Dame" in french which means elegant/sophisticated woman. That's why I love the name Grand Am so much.

Uh, well not sure what you mean or are getting at but the name "Grand Am" actually means "Grand America" - a racing circuit.

Cute thought, but incorrect. I suppose the Trans Am isn't named after the Trans Am racing circuit either, or the Grand Prix,... or the Lemans..... Get it now? Pontiac had/has a string of cars named after racing circiuts. Don't believe me, ask some fellow Pontiac Oakland club members. & if you gotta ask about "Oakland", then well,... you don't know much about Pontiac!.... & sorry Xenowolf, you were right the 1st time, now you're wrong again!

So are they moving from the Grand Am to a "grand am" like car but based on GMs Epsilon "world car" platform that many of the Opels (GM owned) use then?

I thought I replied last night but either it never posted or was deleted somehow... Anyway we'll try it again.

Yes but if they wanted they could still use the Grand Am name plat no matter what platform it is. Espeically seeing as it's been on a few different ones already.

He's actually right, the Grand Am was originally designed to fill the void between the Grand Prix and the Trans Am. Grand Prix comforts with european styling and handling backed by a 400 or 455 cid V8. I don't know of a 'Grand Am' racing series either. But you are correct, the LeMans, Bonniville, GrandPrix, and TransAm are named after those respected motorsports.
And just a side note, the 'Am' stands for Americano as in 'Trans Americano'.

Thanks for the Grand Am series link, I've never seen it before.
I never said there wasn't a series, just that I didn't know of one. But I do know that the Grand Am was originally built to fill the gap between the too styles and be competitive with the new european vehicles of the era. Just about every history publication that comments about the '73 GA mentions it.

Yeah, I remember some of the old ads. My old girlfriend has a 73 w/ a 350 in it. (Atleast I think she still has it) It's a sweet car, dark green w/ a black vinyl top & cragar classics on it - 8" in the front & 10"on the back. Man do I miss drivin that car! She's the reason I joined the Pontiac/Oakland club, her whole family are Pontiac fanatics.
