How good is the stock cd player (standard for the SE1's)?
Wattage?
How has it been for anyone who's kept it for their subs?
also whats a decent 400W RMS sub amp? I saw the phoenix gold series but it seems to be pretty trashy. I'd prefer not to spend over $250 for a decent amp.
thanks

To put it simply, with car audio you get what you pay for.
I've had 150 dollar amps before and they suck.
Now i have a PG ZX450 and ZX500. I've had them for 5 years now with no problems. I can listen to the ZX450 for over 10 consecutive hours non stop full volume before it cuts out. Each amp cost me around 600 dollars. PG has been making alot of trashy lines lately because that's what the people have been buying.
Most uninformed people just buy whatever says it has the highest watts. Be careful becuase there is no agency that controls how manufacturers rate there wattage.
Stick to name brands!

I would have to kinda agree with the sticking with brand names but don't get swept up in the whole thing to much. There are companies like Rockford who built up a good name back in the day but now have just leveled out in quality but not in price. Now don't get me wrong, Rockford isn't all bad its just not so good that you should pay more for them then any other good brand. You pay more for the name then quality. Listen to everything you can and decide for yourself what you like. For the money you want to spend I would suggest Power Acoustic. Kinda an off brand but they have been bullet proof for the store I work at. But if you want better you have to pay for better. JMO Good luck, Lee

That's because all the main engineers from Rockford Fosgate left and went over to MTX. That's why the MTX amps have improved so much over the last couple years.
Another factor why Rockford went downhill is when Best Buy picked them up. In order to fill the demand, Rockford started making their products in foreign countries to keep costs at a minimum, rather than being built in the US like they used to be.

A good cheap amp is the Coustic Power Logic. The old school ones. I let my friend use my amp till i got my speakers fix fixed and he beat it to hell and it stills works fines. It is a 225 watt 2 channel. When he got his 300 or 400watt MTX amp my old coustic still sounded better. If you ever see one ebay get it. Here the only pic of my amp i could find on the net

BTW the amp is almost as old as me

Ok I've looked a bit and was wondering...

460w bridged @ 4ohms
also, kicker...
http://www.kicker.com/ShowPage.cfm?filename=KXMulti.html&menu=AMPS
I was looking at the KX700.5
Its a multichannel amp with built-in class D 400w mono subwoofer amplifier
does 40x4 @ 4ohms
does 75x4 @ 2ohms
and the mono amp does 400x1 @ 2ohms
The price is ridiculously good....like $300 =/ and all the similar kicker amps have RMS ratings at sounddomain and crutchfield, leading me to believe that its not peak power output that is listed...
and I was planning on getting a seperate multi-channel amp for speakers anyways, and it looks like I would save a few hundred bucks doing this.
hmmm

Have you looked around localy? What all are you going to run in this system? What kind of deck are you getting? Lee

the local dealer is asking over $200 for a phoenix gold octane 400x1 @ 4ohms amp
It sells for almost half that on ebay/many online stores.
Not to mention everything I've seen about it makes it seem like trash.
I want to run off the stock HU, I have no need for colorful LCD screens, MP3 capability, and mind reading devices :) Just a normal clean CD output to power some new speakers and a couple 200W RMS subs. The stock HU doesn't provide that kind of oomph hehe :)

Lets just say you just walked into my place of business and said all that. I would first ask how your stock speakers sound, in other words are any of them blown. Guessing you have an ear for distortion I'll say they are o.k. As far as a deck goes I would suggest a pioneer deh-p3500. It has clean power high power to run your full ranges, along with a high pass filter to releive your factory speakers of any bass duties, it also comes with sub outputs so you can turn up your subs without affecting your other speakers, and it has a three band eq for easy tweaking plus a whole lot more usefull features for only $230. Then I would ask what kind of music you listen to, I would beleive a little of everything, but more rap type stuff. I would suggest a set of Crossfire db3 12's in a ported box. They simply rock like no other and they only run $150 each with a good box around $100. I would suggest the Crossfire 600d that would put out a total of 850 watts of RMS power for around $450. Or you could use the Crossfire vr602 which would put out around 700 watts RMS at $375. if those are a little steep for the pocket book I would say a Power Acoustic 1200 which would put out about 500 watts RMS at only $275. You would then get a total package deal with a discount dependent on the equipment you chose. Thats an afternoon inside Redline simplified. Peace out, Lee
