Just curious as to how many miles you 3300 owners have gotten on your motors and trans? Im up to 177000 and would like to know how many miles is ordinary.

well generally the 3t40 transmission doesnt hold the test of time (not the strongest gm tranny) I have been lucky with mine so far however my pump is making noise so my luck may run out eventually. Either way 177000 miles on my tranny without rebuild is pretty amazing.

114,000 on mine.

when i received this car after paying 900 bucks for it. the body was in good shape, the interior was flawless, but the engine had oil pan leaks and valve cover leaks. it also was a crank on start car.

after further investigation, the timing chain was broken, i decided to pull the motor. when i did that, i comtemplated rebuilding or swapping. swapping was easier. i got one with 67000 miles from a old ciera. i couldn't believe how clean the motor was. needless to say i cleaned it up some more. swapped my oil pans and put in a timing chain set.

i think with proper maintenance, that's all theose motors will ever need. a timing chain set. if you're a fanatic, add a timing chain tensioner.

yah .. trannys on our cars kinda suck,, i have burned a few out now...lol but i pritty much ask for it. when i pull trannys for my car, i get 1's from 4 cyl's for the higher stall speeds from the troque converter,, and i think the gears are a bit smaller too. helps contend with imports off the line. engine was rebuilt over the winter but stupid me .. i forgot about the timming chain when i rubuit it :(

what you state about the 4 banger trans is true. i've been researching the gears on the v6 vs the 4 bangers. i think i may eventually swap in a 4 banger trans for more grunt, but it'll wait till i finish the cold air induction. i want to see how well it responds first. most imports are dogs off the line. then they come on at top end. i like to have my breathing up top. yet, for such a large v6, it should have some torque. i'll see if any of my tricks work on this motor. i still have another intake manifold i can massage, and possibly work the heads a bit.......

if you change out your tranny for a 4 banger tranny.... be prepared for some new front end tires.. lol ,,, they burn quickly

107,000 on my 93... i beat the shit out of it since i got it as my first car at 100,500 miles. So far no problems besides blown motor/tranny mounts, creaks and banges all the time lol, but it goes ok... one thing i like about the 3 speed over the 3100 4's is at 40 mph i floor my car and it downs to 1st and 4k+ and im off, while my friends 96 GA shifts to second at 2.5k rpms and bairly moves...see ya later!!! but off the line it sux....

My cousin's Century Coustom with the 3.3 has like 240,000 miles on it, although it just recently started to knock. That's pretty good; probably helps that he uses synthetic oil.

114,000 om my 93 GAGT though see knocks a bit when cold out(Runs rough Idle seems low)

23,000 on my 93 Skylark (car has 182,000) engine dropped at 152,000 had an engine built from GMHP for the price tag of 3316.00- get this it is the 2nd, since the first one they put in was orig equipment and had a torn PVC boot causing the trans not to shift at highway speeds. I got it to about 73mph before I spun the mains out of the crank(In highway traffic heading to Lansing, Mich). GM had to replace it again free of charge.

164000 miles with metal in the oil (it gets changed weekly), a tranny that cant make up its mind (it gets flushed monthly), a rough idle, blown struts and shocks. but it runs and gets 27 mpg, so i guess ill limp it along as long as possible. oh yeah its a gross polluter too. but i love this car so much its too bad the guy before me didnt love it half as much. i guess he went 60,000 without an oil change. its a shame

that really sucks about your 3300, just the opposite of mine, she runs like she is brand new, and i still get 30mpg.i only have about 141,000 on mine now, most of the miles are on the highway.

140,000 give or take a couple hundred, tranny shifts strong, engine runs like a tank. However it has a wierd rev in park, it oscillates between 500-1K until i shift into neutral or any drive gear. Add to that a lazy HVAC fan motor, a "thump" when i brake going in reverse, a bum power door lock, and a slight exhaust leak. but hey, it was free.

03-10-2006, 11:42 PM
Oh oh my mom had a bad power door lock only on the Passenger front door on her 92! And my friends 92 Achiva 3300 has an exhaust leak out of the rear exhaust bank

231,000 miles on my '93 SE

Runs well, does not burn oil, 27MPG, Daily Driver

Transmission shifts well but slips a little from time to time when shifting from 1st to 2nd.

If you have a bad power door lock on a '93 or like model look at the switch itself. I popped the driver side switch after it quite working (passenger still worked) expecting to find a dirty contact. What I found was that the contact was so corroded that upon trying to clean it, it crumbled away. I repaired it very easily with a piece of solid core wire and a dab of super glue. It has worked like a charm ever since for almost 4 years.

it could be a bad IAC, check to see if the wires in the plug are good.

I must confess that I have absolutely no guess as to what these abreviations stand for, like IAC, OEM and the many others. Think ur all so smart EH! lol :)

Prospeeder
03-27-2006, 09:52 PM
IAC = Idle air control valve, it controls the air entering the engine durning idle via a pintle on the side of the throttle body.

OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer or somthing along those lines, just stock stuff

My '92 se has 140,368, the tranny had to have a solenoid replaced at 132,000, because it would expand after heating up and stall the engine.

i posted in this thread a while back, and since doing a transmission a month ago on this car, i figure i should update

93SE has 118,000 miles. i put a rebuilt trans in, and i was suprised to see that the one i took out was also a rebuild! so that's atleast 3 transmissions in 118k miles. yikes!

i guess that's why the guy who sold it to us slipped and said "yeah we had the tranny flushed a few times so it didnt blow up" haha

1992 Grand AM SE with the 3300 V6 and 4 speed auto transmission.

Bought it in 2002 from an old lady who bought it new and used it only for groceries. I'm pretty sure the back seat wasn't used at all.
It had everything original and only 68,000km(42,000mi).

Since then we put 114,000km(72,000mi) on it. Changed the starter twice, the alternator twice, the lower radiator hose once, the front shocks once(they're almost due again), changed the exhaust and patched the muffler once, changed the front rotors twice. Now the windshield washer pump is not working, the power locks work when they feel like it, the front and rear shocks are due again, the engine gets crusty really fast when it's not being used and it idles funny every once in a while.

I love the fact that I don't have to bring it higher than 2500 RPM to have a good acceleration and once in last gear I can stay there all day even at low speeds. I hate the fact that it revs as high as 2500 RPM when I'm on the highway.

I love the fact that all that weight on the front tires act as an anchor and requires very little course adjustments if you start skidding. I hate the fact that all that weight over the front tires means I go through shocks and rotors once every two years, and brakes and tires every year.

I think this car was a huge bargain because of all the miles we've put on it for the amount we paid(4000$CAN). However now the amount of repair and maintenance required to keep it running is quickly annoying me and I'm thinking everyday of buying an old Toyota Tercel Standard.

I know you guys are looking for a 4speed Auto so if you're interested let me know. I'll see if we can arrange something.

no mine are ok, all they suffer from is a little bit of peeling and some excessive brake dust buildup in some of the fine lines and crevices... I am missing 2 of the center round hubcap thingys so i just removed them all...

245,000 miles

Original trans and motor runs like it did 145,000 miles ago.

Best car I've owned, and that's why I'm redoing the exterior. If and when the motor goes bad I will look into an L67 swap, or atleast a Series 1 sc swap. I think a nice hood scoop or cowl would be nice anyway.
