Hello, Im looking to get a newer car in a month or so, Im pretty sure I want to get a 99+ SE 4-door with all the basic power options (PL, PW, PM) and spoiler, Im just tring to figure out if I should go with a 3400 or a 2.4, the MPG's look the same, power isnt really an issue, im more conserned about reliability and durability. which is better way to go?

if powers not an issue then try to get the 2.2, if you cant get the 3.4 instead of the 2.4. the 3.4 has LIM problems, but i think the 2.4 has worse ones. i think water pump is one of them.

Yeah...Be prepared to hate life if your waterpump goes on a 2.4. I think it's something like three and a half years labor and your first born child for the mechanic to fix that. Pretty much the bane of all Twin Cam owners. That and the #3 rod bearing (Which I think has more to do with tards who romp on their car too much than normal wear).

Besides that it's, in my opinion, the best 4 cylinder engine out there.

LOL, just playin'... even if you're not really in to power, I'd go with the 3400... a little more power is always nice, like for pullin' out into traffic, it makes that little bit of difference...

It's not like it's a monsterous amount of power that'll eat up gas and get you killed, just convenience power!

Go with the V6 More power than a crapy 4 banger. 4 bangers sux. :) just kidding to all the 4 banger drivers out there. :D

go with the 3400. more torque and a better throaty tone when accelerating. ;)

you want a sweet ass throaty sound? get keith's CAI with a 3400 and youd be amazed to hear the sound coming out of a GA! it sounds like a deep low rumble, then, as you apply a certain pressure, you hear a clean, air cooled whistle at about 3500 rpms, my god its the most amazing sound in the world and it just feels the power!

Yea, my water pump cost $700 to replace, but at the dealership. So if it ever goes again...it's FREE! Other than that, my 4 has given my no problems at all. And with more than 350 miles to that tank...who can argue?

I've heard (only heard) that 4-cyl are more reliable/last longer. Don't know if there's any truth to that, but I'd say that it's a draw in your situation. If you wanted the extra power without MOD's, then go with the 6, but you can get a lot more than you might think with a little 4-banger and some MODs:agree: ...

I guess it's up to you...

im knocking on a big ass piece of oak as im saying this.

my girlfriends 2.4 hasn't given her an ounce of trouble yet. which she hardly ever drives the car hard, most of her driving is in the country and open roads, what little intown driving she does doesn't amount to very much, and i try to keep all the fluids checked and changed.

Yeah, when I was riding with him, and we were merging on the highway, he hit the gas, and I was like woha (windows up and music on too) I was amazed at the sound, I asked him what kind of exhaust he had, he said all stock, that sound is from his CAI, I was like wow, coudln't believe it......

......then I wanted one on my car, but it wouldn't fit/look right :D

I have the 2.4L in my Cav. Haven't had a single problem and it will be 6 years old this December. Also, the water pump issue is suppose to be with the 96-97 models and the #3 rod is suppose to be with the 99 models. I beat the crap out of my 2.4L (supercharger), and it still runs like a top while putting out over 215hp to the ground. :)

I have the 3400 in my GA, but I just bought it 2 days ago so I can't give much input on that one. :D

Well, let me put in my input......

...if it's just a daily driver, and you have a V8 'Stang to play with, get the 2.4, simply becuase it is smaller, less gas, cheaper to maintain (4 spark plugs instead of 6 etc....) Also, doing work on it should be a little more easy, changeing the spark plugs on a transversly mounted V engine is a PITA.

Honestly though, if it were me, I would get a '96-'98 GAGT with the 2.4 and 5spd....just the idea of having a 5spd GT is sweet....

I would go with the 3400 V6

If you were saying 3100 vs. 2.4 I'd definatly have to say the 2.4. ;)

But the 3400 makes significantly more HP and torque than the 2.4...so if you're looking for power the choice is obvious. As for gas mileage I've never been impressed with what my 4 banger has gotten. It seems to be no better than V6's.

As for problems my water pump went out at 78K or so, cost me $450 to get it replaced. Other than that the only problem I've had in 3 years was the intake duct seal not sealing, $15 and a screwdriver to replace it fixed that problem.

I've been known to drive like crazy, and so far the 2.4 has taken it and kept going. I would definatly say it's reliable and durable.

But for straight up power, it's obvious which is the winner.

All depends on what you're wanting in a car.

I have the 2.4L in my GA and my wife has the V6 in her malibu. Off the line her car has more pull, but once you get up to 35 mph or so , my 4-banger really pulls hard. I noticed a big increase when I installed the RSM intake. By the way, the intake leak does & will happen sooner or later.:D I have 83,000 on my GA and it still feels brand new!

i say 94-95GA 3100 or 99+ 3400
