we went to the talledega super speedway and saw a monte carlo. this was a special edition monte. it had some kind of flames on it. there was no color, just a matte finish vinyl a little bit darker than the color of the car. my wife LOVED them! she wants them on her 03 grand am. anyway, has anyone seen what i'm talking about, and do you know were i can get a good picture of them? i work in a graphics shop and all of i need is a picture. any help would be great.

I've heard them called 'Ghosted Flames' or something to that effect.. and I have a video with a Supra that has them, but its considerably large and I have nowhere to upload it.

When it comes to Ghost flames, nothing beats paint. You can try vinyl, but it doesn't come close;)

I have ghost flames painted on my car. in certain light they stand out slightly with a faint plue pearl...in other light you can't even see a trace of them.
Check out some older pics of them on my car at my cardomain site.

Ghost flames are painted w/ tinted clearcoat. Thus giving a appearing/ dissappearing effect. Not to be confused w/ just regular flame painted a shade lighter or darker. Ghost flames cannot be done in vinyl.

The reason I basically said the only way you can pull it off is with paint is because you'll always see the vinyl outline. w/ paint you lay several more clear coats over them & then wetsand them smooth & rub it all out. Then they are truely ghost flames. at one angle you see nothing, at others they appear at varying degrees. (I've done it several times:D )

jayhawk signs and graphics. this monte had vinyl, i'm just not sure if it was frosted clear or just plain clear. we like the whole idea of appearing and dissapearing flames. we just don't know what to use. she doesn't know exactly what she wants, she just saw those and fell in love. the guy i work with at the shop just put full graphics on his sunfire, they looked so good that we want something now. i think that it was a jeff gordon edition monte, it was that blue dupont color. i only go to the races once a year so if any happens to go next week, look for me. it was at the chevy showcase booth. thanks for all of your help. also does anyone know: if i put 2 inch drop springs on my grand am, do i need new struts? do i need anything else? do i need them if i only drop it 1 inch? does anyone know of a place that sells a whole kit? thanks again for the help!

BTW at jayhawk, we do everything, just give us a call. 620-231-1789
were not ot worried about lines showing up, we plan on selling the car in a couple of years. this way if the new owners don't want it thay can take it off. we will hopefully be getting a GTP Comp Grand Prix. tap shifters would be nice!:D

okee, where in PA are you? and how much did your flames cost??? i've been getting quotes around here (philly) and the best i got was $3000 for ghost flames. what you have is exactly what i want...where you can barely see them except in certain lights....but i don't know if i want them bad enough to pay 3 grand on it. (i could buy another set of chrome 17s and a new sc/t hood for that amount....) that's the reason for my local paint shop thread...but most of the places around here had no clue what ghost flames were (:roll2: ) or they suggested vinyl which is not what i want. please let me know how far from philly and how much...thanks :)

I'm about an hour and a half / 2 hours north of Philly in the Scranton area. I've had my flames done twice. The first shop did them for $400 (on the hood, Trunk Lid and my Spoiler). I had them re-done a 2nd time because I got a new custom hood (sorry no pics on line yet) and the shop that did the ghost flames first gave up on custom work because they were making more money on Insurance jobs. The 2nd Ghost flame job was $500 (and was 1000% better then the first).
What were you looking to have the ghost flames painted on...the whole car? for $3000 I'd be expecting quite a bit of custom work to be done. My friend had an 01 Cav. Z-24, had his door handles , inner tails, and antenna shaved, and car completely repainted (slight color change too, for a little over 3g.
If you have any other questions, PM me. I'll be morethan happy to help you out if I can. :)

Just to point out 4 you guys, proper ghost flames requires a complete clearcoating of the car to be done right. So in other words, you are getting a new paintjob. And a good clear costs near $300 a gallon. You use the clear to make the flames as well as 3 to 4 coats on the entire car. (you'll loose a coat to a coat & 1/2 around the flamed area when it's wet sanded & rubbed out & maybe 1/4 to 1 coat on the rest of the car.) So the guys that quoted $3000 are probably aiming to do it right & not cut any corners, granted I too think it's a little high, they could easily have near $1,000 in materials. Even at $60 per hour I find it hard to belive they'd have more than $1,000 to $1,500 in labor. But you do get what you pay 4, keep that in mind. I would expect show quality finish & over all job @$3,000 & I would assume that's what they are aiming to do at that price.
