Hi Guys,

What are your thoughts on the K&N filter for 1998 GA 2.4L? I figure why not, if anything its reusable and will save me $ in the long run. Around here (southern Ontario) an air filter (paper) costs $15, and the K&N is $80, so it won't take long to pay that off. Anything to keep in mind?

Keep in mind the cost of the cleaning/recharge kit when you do your math :)

You should also notice a difference on your gas mileage.

Nothing but good things :D

I agree my gas mileage did increast and the fact you just can hose it off even not have to renew it at some points makes it awesome.

I give it a failing grade. I used one in my 98 with the 3.1L. It uses the same filter element as your 2.4L. The K&N never seem to seal quite as tight as a paper filer (rubber surround was too thin to make good solid contact). It left the "clean" side of the airbox covered in a light residue (that looked like very very very fine silica).

K&N also are not significantly freer flowing than a quality paper filter, nor do they filter as well as a quality paper filter such as Baldwin or Wix/NAPA Gold.

I don't know when you tried it but they revised the model for the GA filter and it now comes with an extra gasket to put around the air box lip to seal it.

Never had that kind of problem with mine...

I had one prior to the extra gasket inclusion in the kit.

I'd still never buy another one when there are paper filters (Baldwin, and Wix) that filter better and and have only a very small pressure drop when compared to the K&N (on the order of 0.03" of water). The K&N is simply not worth it (at least in drop in form) gaining no hp/tq or throttle response.

Well, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree because I did feel a noticeable change in throttle response when I installed my drop-in K&N. Very noticeable gain in gas mileage too.

Ya, my dad uses one in his 2000 F-350 Power Stroke Diesel. Man does that thing suck in air, with the turbo charger and all. He's really happy with his, I just wasn't sure if it was worth it for the GA. Turns out now that I'm getting it for X-mas, so now it won't cost me a thing.

See on the power stroke that would actually be worthwhile since its a forced induction V8, however, the stock air box probably already provides enough air, but in this case a little bit extra flow will help.

I have one and so far I think I would purchase another one. I wouldn't pay $80 for it though, I think mine was less than $45 for the same filter.

I didn't notice a difference in gase mileage, but then again I don't keep up with it unless I have a reason to.

Overall I'd say it does a good job and it's been worth the money. Extra HP? I don't know...... if so it's a small, small amount.

I had a k&n drop in filter and never had any problems with it. If you plan on keeping your car and do alot of driving I would recommend it becaue it will save you money in the long run and you can go 50,000 miles without cleaning it. If you've been thinking about eventually gaining some more power for your car you would be better off getting a k&n cone filter.

Goldfinger,

That's $80 canadian though, so that's like 50US. That's the going rate here at any store.

I have one... always have in my GA's. But I can't say that I've noticed a difference between that and a paper filter.

 You can hose out it unlike a paper filter god knows ram air can suck in junk

actually on a forced induction it would help less, because the wastegate in the turbo is still goin to regulate the amount of pressure that is in the intake manifold, so in conclusion...IT WONT MAKE A DAMN BIT OF DIFFERENCE!!!but on a GA it will give you a little power

I just got one to see if there would be a difference, I guess there was a little better throttle response

Got it for Christmas, seems like better throttle response to me. I like it. It might just be a mind thing right now. Before the filter I was getting 12.3km/L on my 2.4L 98 GA SE. We'll see if it has gone up from here.
