this is accualy a question for my 2000 dodge dakota, and very technical. the forum i use for that isnt working an i need new tires and answers before it rains more. my dak has the 3.55 gears. would putting smaller tires on have the same affect as putting larger gear ratios in the rear differential (like 4.1).

Yes, I believe it does, Jayhawk actually did this on his grand am. I would get a hold of him and ask him about it for more details.

After cleaning out a few posts... (PLAY NICE IN MY SECTION!) I can answer you this.
I put on tires that are about an inch smaller than stock. Yes, it does affect the final drive; a good example is drag cars with super tall tires. Why? For better top end. I noticed an increase in accelaration.
I used to have 14" Fiero rims on my car, then I had to put the stock tires and rims back on to get new tires. When I put the stock back on, man was it slow to accelarate! So when I got tires I did some online research and found a 15" tire that was the same height as the 14" Fiero tire.

And you are not alone as far as Mopars go...one of my employees likeS to lurk here; he has a 12 second 1970 Dart!

i didnt mean any disrepect, i was just looking for a serious answer.
any way, so bigger is for top end. and smaller is for better acceleration, say off the line?
if i went with smaller tires would it make acceleration at 90mph slower? or would it just make it so my top speed is lower?

Its cool...I was directing it more towards the other person. :)

With the 1" difference, it will be all around better. Nothing very dramatic.

Depends. If you went my route, it will help, but f you go say, 3-4" smaller than stock, yes the top end will be limited.
To answer Themeneeas question, the speedo is about 4-6 mph off.

you can get the computer reprogrammed so it knows you have the different size tires to correct the speedometer. but i need to find out how much it will cost. might be pricy. and dodge are a$$h0!es when it comes to mods and warrentys. but im over 36000 miles, so to hell with them.
