Hey everyone,
I was curious about the longevity of our engines- where is everyone at for mileage on their 3400 V6?
I'll start:

35000kms - no problems other then a chip in the windscreen that has turned into a 7" crack. Occasional Sulphur dioxide smell when driving at highway speeds, right side exhaust tips have rusted - thought these were stainless steel tips.

So from the sound of it, the intake manifold gasket seems to be notorious for going bad. Mine went bad about 2 weeks ago. I thought it was the thermostat and I replaced it. Then I found a slow leak in the gasket right below the throttle body. But from what I have read here the 180 degree thermo should do teh trick? Any advice would be greatly apreciated. I'm all ears :bigear: Taking apart the top end of my car doesnt sound like the best way to spend a weekend.

Uh, you just PRAY that the LIM Gasket isn't leaking into your cyclinders. If they are, they could potentially hydro-lock your engine which would basically necessitate a new one.
I have to say, out of every car I've owned, this one is the biggest POS I've had the pleasure of paying for.
As I write this I'm looking up a place to have my brakes fixed. For the 2nd time, in under 60,000 miles.
(Yes, I have a '99 vehicle that's under 60,000 miles. No, I don't go on trips w/ the thing.)

Just on a side note, why do so many people seem to have brake problems? Ceramic brake pads are the way to go. And on a side note, if you can get friendly with a Mienike brake mechanic Brembro all around is only about $600. Just a thought for those of you that are having issues
BTW I'm at 68,000 miles and nothing but a gas cap and brakes (about 5000 mi ago) The shocks and struts are being replaces soon, and Eibach springs to lock in the corners better

Well, the majority of the problems that I have heard of/experienced are with the rotors suffering from Lateral Runout/Warping within 12,000 miles. Mine have just started to warp again for the second time and I'm not sure they can be turned again.
Oh, and your rear drum brakes (if you don't have a GT) tend to not stay properly adjusted, so you end up stopping solely on you front brakes so often that you wear out your pads as well.
Basically, the factory rotors are crap.
Oh, and I'm not going to spend $600 for Brembo brakes on a car that's given me this much grief. I will never buy another Grand Am/similar platform vehicle again.
Here's to hoping the G6 is worth a spit.

P.S. There has been several HARD stops in that time period incuding a day at the track.

P.S. There has been several HARD stops in that time period incuding a day at the track. How often to you check them? It's not like it's terribly convenient to have to check 20 lugnuts (especially taking off the 20 plastic covers) all while it's 10F degrees outside.
I think the point is that you shouldn't have to do that. I've never seen any other cars that have such crappy brakes as GM's do.

Did I say no problems? Whoops!
Passenger Window regulator is messed up,
cd player had to be replaced,
cruise control buttons had to be replaced(had to remove volume controls too, so I replaced them since I had to buy new ones anyways),
breaks like to vibrate sometimes, especially right after rotation of tires, but They stop fine, so screw fixing it,
Sunroof doesn't stay shut, so pops up a bit when closing door, or stays up a bit when driving over 65 mph! (How do I fix it?),
Emergency Handbrake doesn't work at all (Dammit, no sliding for me! I really want this fixed),
Had to charge A/C, how often do you have to do this?
Service Vehicle Soon light comes on at least once every two months, but goes off. (I think this only happens when it's really wet)Service Engine Light went on once and it was misfiring, but this corrected itself after car was sufficiently thawed and had all snow removed from engine compartment.
So, basically no serious mechanical problems, just minor problems, most of which I can't afford to fix right now.
Of course, I wouldn't know how to tell if I was on the verge of a serious problem.

There are several kits that you can get to flush it ranging in at $6.00 to $20.00. If you have a pro do it you can pay up to $45 to $60. They do a little more thourogh job but then you can flush a coolant system 4 or fie times in a row and still come out cheaper.

74K mi and a new problem. My driver's side window doesn't want to roll down anymore. Like it's a frozen over day and there is ice all over it, but it's 65 F out and sunny.
Lucky for me my LIM gasket is still in great shape. Had a vacum hose problem that made me think it was the LIM but $.15 later I was running great.
Remeber your spark plugs are really only 50K mi plugs. You should also flush the power steering, brakes, and engine (desluge) at 50K mi. I thought I was going to cry when I saw how dirty all the fluids really were.

When you try to roll the window down do you hear the motor at all? If not, chances are the motor is frozen up, and you'll have to replace it. Which happened to me last year. =|

I'm getting up there - not even 4 years old yet, and I'm at 48,500 mi. I'm thinking of getting something new, and having the GA as my second car.
This car is getting too much heavy duty use - living in the suburbs now, I find myself hauling alot of crap. This weekend, I picked up landscaping materials for the yard, like rocks and mulch for the garden, and had to haul it in the GA trunk. It was very heavy. I'm thinking of getting a 4 door pickup. That way, I can haul more crap without damaging the GA.

And trust me, I'm the king of hauling stuff in my car. I can't wait till my girlfriend gets an SUV like she wants so I can stop using mine. I've hauled like 15 bags of mulch at one time in the trunk and back seat, 12 x 40 lb. bags of topsoil, stuff to build a fence like bags of concrete and gravel, 8 ft 4x4's, several 12 ft 2x4's, and about a few dozen pickets (all pressure treated - so heavy). I've had 4x8 sheets of plywood and 4x8 sheets of wood lattice tied to my roof. I've had those cheap entertainment center's and bedroom furniture (you know the particle board kind - meaning really heavy) sticking out the trunk. I've had a 24' extension ladder (it's only ~12' collapsed) sticking about 4' out the trunk. Thank god for the fold down rear seat. I get some pretty funny looks when I've driving with that stuff.
The one time I was hauling wood and concrete to make the frame for a garden. When I put one of the bags of concrete in the trunk it accidentally broke. I had long 2x4's, 2x8's and 4x4's sticking out the trunk. Well, on the way home (~45 min drive) it started to rain and the water was getting in the trunk and running down the wood to the front. And the dry concrete got wet and started to harden! So I had formed concrete in my trunk. What a nightmare to clean that up.

How can you tell if you LIM is leaking?
DangerMouse
05-19-2004, 02:00 PM
That's the catch. You might not be able to tell. They can leak internally or externally. Internally gives the chance of hyrdolocking a cylinder which basically totals the engine.
If you have to put coolant in it every few months (or days, or longer depending on how bad of a leak it is.) you might have one.

60000 miles, Intake manifold gasket gone, found someone that would replace all the upper engine gaskets for $250 if I could get the gaskets. Yay. Another engine, the joys of completely dawging engines.

Thought I'd chime in here... Just hit about 76,000 miles.
Got new tires last fall/winter.
Have a bad wheel bearing. (trying to find someone to fix it for cash since I have the part)
Had to replace a Serpentine Belt.
Can't think of anything else offhand that was anything major. No engine problems at all. Getting around 280 miles per 11-12 gallon fill up.

I hate this car. But it is paid for so... Looks like a lemon to me. You should get a new car - I had a fraction of what you did and I still thought it was way too many repairs for the mileage I had (~75,000 I think).

11-12-2004, 09:38 AM
Umm, define beat?
The only body damage on the car is on the diver's side corner of the rear bumper where I backed into someone a few years ago.
Timing belts? - Nortoriously cheap on 99+ G/A's
Brakes? - Rotors are notorious for warping on 99+ G/A's
Power Window motors? - How does one beat on something that goes up or down with a switch?
Speakers? - Yes, these I probably beat on by playing them too loudly.
CD Players? - Um, put CD in, press play. I don't punch it or anything.
LIM Gasket? - Known issue with the 3.4 engine.
Fading paint? - Not sure how I'd cause this either.
Rear Tail Ligh Bulbs? - Known design issue causes the connectors to melt.
Alternator? - Happens
The interior of the car is in immaculate condition, the exterior minus the rear bumper damage and the plastic air-dam up front that I lost to a muffler in the road one day. Is in good shape.
For the record I owned a '96 Grand Am previous to the '99 both were purchased new from the same dealer. I had 0 problems with the '96. Heck, even Consumer Reports lists the electrical system for the '99 as poor.
Hell, my '82 Ford Escort was more reliable when I was driving it in '96 with the only major repair it had ever required was a cracked head/head gasket, and the parking brake froze once.

76K mi.
Blew out the power steering wrighting my name in the snow last year (still ain't fixed)
My Serpentine Belt has been split in 2 for 50K.
1 Battery (even now it dies if I don't drive it for a day)
After reading this post I now know my LIMG is gone
1 set of tires
2 sets of brakes (front of coarse)
1 headlight
63 qt. of oil and 12 oil filters (if my math is correct)
has been plugged in 2-3 times to reset meaningless codes
just regapped the plugs this week (all about .010-.015 over)
And the biggest problem yet is the problem I posted in the P&S forum that I am at a loss as to the exact cause. (horrible performance except between 3-4K RPM's)
My current flow of income is very low, so these problems keep adding up. I know I drive it hard, I know I'm asking for trouble, and I know that "You play you pay!" But it's like an addiction... I can't keep the petal off the floor.

I got my 2000 GT just before Thanksgiving of this year. It had just under 62,000 Miles and in the last three weeks, the fuse box, cruise control module, intake gasket OH! and the MOTOR has had to be replaced. The moter is being worked on as we speak. At least the dealer is paying for all the repairs. The Grand Am isn't a bad car, I just have bad luck.

Just over 57k miles on my 2001 SE1. No major problems with the car at all so far. Just replaced the brake pads about 7k miles ago and changed the oil roughly ever 3k miles. I upgraded the battery for the audio system but the old one was leaking a little anyways. Some things that I may have to fix soon are:
- LIM shows signs of leaking.
- Front tires need to be replaced (rear ones are in excellent condition! What gives)
- Fluids flushed (coolant and power steering look dirty)
- Need all rotors and pads checked.
That's about it. This car has been the best to me of all the cars Ive owned so I consider myself fortunate.

99 GA V6 4 Door, started off as a small overheating problem, water pump wouldn't pump coolant into engine, thermostat went bad, took to LOCAL SHOP IN TOWN, they made the repairs, flushed all the fluids said ran fine, get it back, and theres a loud knocking coming from the engine, after i got half way to work about 2 miles, knocking starts, and car dies, check all the fluids and they dumbasses forgot to put any fluids, coolant and oil back into car, car overheated and blew motor........after a long battle over the phone and in person, they owners of the shop agreed to purchase a new motor, so my girl will be back on the road here shortly. Blown Motor at 122K miles.........for those that live near or around Jacksonville, North Carolina.......DO NOT TAKE YOU VEHICLE TO ANY BUFFALO TIRES IN THE AREA, SINCE THEY BLEW MY MOTOR, I HAVE NOW HEARD OVER 15 DIFFERENT COMPLAINTS FROM THEIR CUSTOMERS ABOUT MAJOR PROBLEMS caused to their vehicles after mistakes made at buffalo!!!

I think I'm a late comer to this thread, but anyways:
I bought a used 99 SE in October 2004. It had just about exactly 100,000km on it. I had the car for two months, and both power stearing hoses burst. The electric seat level adjustment stopped working on the driver side. And this is a weird one, the little knob that controls the power mirors disappeared. I have no idea what happened to it. Brakes are starting to thump, going to need to get them checked out.
This doesn't really count, but I also picked up a nail in the tire, and had a hit and run smash up my rear bumper while I was parked at a mall. I'm just getting around to fixing that.
Right now I'm praying the rest of my time with this car isn't as rough, I've still got plenty of that car loan to pay off.....

well the 2000 grand am we actually own.... (the 04 isn't quiet ours yet, the dealer is letting us "borrow" it until we know if the 2000 is totaled)
Anyways, she was in a bad accident friday night on the normway north of the twin bridges where people may know where that is, my dad was driving he is ok. 170,000 miles and 10 more months to pay it off.... hopefully its totaled then the gap insurance will pay it off :) 90,000-tranny went, never did have passing gear, it would basically feel like neutral it u nailed it and expected passing gear.
Brakes, tires.
Windsheilds, Constant Northway driving will throw tons of rocks.
more tires and brakes....
only prblem up to date now besides it being wrecked, is that the abs light has been on for quite some time. Excellent car for a 4cyl....
Now our soon to be new grand am (hopefully, prey for us!!!) is a beaut!!!!I thought that 4cyl was fast, they have defientlly updated the 6's since 88 haven't they? they used to be DOGS!!!

117,5XX miles, as far as I know there have been no major problems, only a minor problem of the cigar lighter fuse blowing. New tires, oil changed regularly as far as I can tell. Needs a new battery, spark plugs and wires, and maybe the fluids changed (automotives class + car lift = one happy car). No LIM problems, no clue if it was changed, as I've only owned it for the last ~2 months. Hopefully this car lasts *knock on wood*.

96,000 miles and no problems with mine except I hear a slight pinging noise when I start my car but the noise goes away after a few seconds. I think I need to tighten or replace my lifters.

Yes... I'm hearing the same pinging noise in mine as well. I have 99K miles.... The noise lasts for a few minutes and then it goes away as it warms up....
I'm on my way to the parts store to buy the blower motor resistors... That seems to be a common item...

just went through the 9 pages on this thread. My 02 now has 240,000 miles on it ( I use it for work and yes I drive alot). I feel its been a good car. Built much better then a 92 gm car I had.
Ok heres what I've fixed on it(I pretty much fix everything my self)
LIM around 30,000 (under warranty
front wheel bearings 35,000 and 200,000
catayilic converter 150,000 (plugged up)
thats the major stuff , now the normal maintance suff
on third set of tires
fourth set of front brakes
second set of back brakes
third set of front rotors
second set of back rotors
So as you can see I've got my use out of this car. Still hoping for 300,000 + miles yet . I'm also picky about maintance, change oil every month . So my opinion on the Grand Am is its a excellent car if you drive them like crazy(highway miles)and obvious maintance helps too.

i was curious exactly where is the fuel filter and how much is the part?
i think that is the cause for my car's poor gas mileage, it has 70k and some change (about a 100 miles or so)

behind the gas take and in front of the rear susp. its pretty easy to remove. and the fuel filter costs about $12 for a good WIX filter...dont cheap out on that stuff

00 Grand am SE. currently at 60k miles, heres a full list of stuff that went bad through no fault of my own that shouldnt have.
Passenger window regulator - 21,994
spontaneous windshield crack 3" long in lower left - 28,865
"front disc brake service" - 28,885
evacuate and recharge AC + blower motor switch - 44,000ish
resurface front rotors + new pads - 44,205
4 new tires - 48,132
Water pump, Radiator, serpentine belt, AC evap/compressor/condensor cost of $2782 - 50,000ish
lower intake manifold - 53,147
driver window regulator - 60,000ish
I counted the 4 tires as not my fault, cause every tire put on the front got worn down so quick even after rotating normally and having to get 4 flats replaced with entirely new tires.
Rear drums have been making horrible noises for the past 15k and braking ability is pretty shitty but the front ones are actually holding up well now.
I had so many probs with the AC. it was the biggest pain in the ass; it kept losing charge, took it to a few mechanics who tried to find the leak several times and couldnt and now it works well considering everything AC related was replaced out of desperation

85k+ miles. i agree 100%. i have had a few problems, but never costly, and never severe (like smoke or a break down). the tires and brakes are more driver style than car type. hard on the gass off the line=more tires to buy, stopping at the last minute=more brake pads and rotors.

01 with 67k, previous owner did the intake gaskets at 57k, I bought it at 58k.
Right now I'm having problems with the front end, cause she had to have gotten into an accident. I've got a nasty shimmy between 65 mph and 75 mph after which it goes away... Idk about that. But I'm replacing both front wheel hubs cause the ABS and Traction Control have lost their minds. I'm thinking a tie rod end or two need replacing, and also replacing the sway bar end links and the serp belt. I think that was all stuff she let go because she was selling it though... Other than that stuff, all caused by the previous owner, (except the ABS crap) is kinda normal.
I also think my passenger side regulator may be on its last legs. I don't use that window anymore though...
I'm hoping once all this stuff is done that I'll be good for another 30k or so... At least I'm hoping.

My 03 GT: at 9000- rear brake warpage- it actually would make neat scratching noises driving around, replaced battery, installed 200amp alt and big cables, replace dexcool with green, 'cuz it makes me feel better
at 20,000 replaced green coolant with G05, everything is still great at 35000
Wifeys 04 SE: at 40,000 MC replaced, coolant flushed, 50,000 still have long pedal travel with new brakes til I can bleed em.... wind noise from windshield area
Both cars running Amsoil TSO 0w30 and full synthetic EAO filters at each point, changed at between 15k-25k each. (we each commute 75+ miles a day...) Absolutely great stuff! They actually run quieter, and made the exhaust atleast seem louder, to me anyways...

but, when i bought it, i had the brakes done, the regulator doohicky for the blower motor that is always seeming to go bad, and a wheel bearing.
same old story, almost at 80K (i've put about 10K on it now) it's really the best car i've ever had.. and from hearing these suckers gettin almost 300K....my car's yet a pup! awesome awesome, it's off to the body shop and apparently i got another 10 years of keeping it around LOL

I just bought a 99 GAGT in April to replace my gas guzzling Durango that I've park. It had about 145K on it when I bought her. She just hit 150K today and going strong. I've replaced a wheel hub and window regulator.

im at almost 80k miles.
no engine problems. except for the stupid effin' security no start thing which isnt really engine related.
other than that, its just minor stuff; spark plugs, window motor, speed sensor, etc.
im pretty happy with my 3400
Well, my 2000 GT crossed the magic 100,000 mile mark this weekend. And to celebrate, the water pump sprung a leak and dumped a bunch of the coolant all over the garage floor last night.
In five years and 75,000 miles it has had the LIM gaskets replaced, a fuel pump, a fuel level sender, two accessory drive belts and two and a half sets of tires.
I still have some things on the to-do list though - the leaky water pump, new front pads and rotors are needed and the air conditioning doesn't work. The body has hail dents and the clearcoat on the hood is peeling so I'm thinking a new paint job will be in my future (matte or satin black should give it a "get the hell out my way" look) and the headlamps are badly faded from eight years of sunlight so maybe a set of projectors are on the cards. The stuts probably needs replacing soon too, so while things are apart a set of springs and new top mounts will probably happen too. Assuming I can get she-who-controls-the-checkbook to agree. :D Some better seats would be good, but that would be pushing my luck too much. ;)
