I recently put new rings and head on my 95 Grand am 2.3L Quad four. After engine warms up oil pressure light comes on at idle. Put gauge on in place of pressure pickup. Cold 40 psi idle 80 at road speed. Warm 10 psi at idle 40 max at road speed. Also engine makes a knocking speed when it is warm when your rev it up. quiet at idle. Help is my oil pump going out?

My 89 quad 4 DOHC after the rebuild started at 80 pressure and would lower to around 40 after driving 30 + minutes.

How long did the motor sit, before you completed the work. There is a bearing in the oil pump that can stick if it sat long. The pump is driven off the timing chain, so it has to be pumping. The pickup screen on the filter can also be dirty, so not enough oil is getting by.

I put an oil pressure gauge on the engine last night. When started runs 60 psi at 55 mph 40 at idle. After engine warms up 5 psi at idle 18 at 55mph. I am going to repace the oil pump tonight and see what happens

... what viscosity oil are you running?

5w 30 what the manual calls for. Also when the engine is warm there is a lot of knocking coming from the the area of the oil pump when the engine is reved.

... so you don't damage the engine while figuring this out, I'd use a little higher viscosity oil

Bought the car for $400 (95 se 88k miles) with locked engine. Some mechanic had repaced timing chain and not set it right. All intake valves were broke off form hitting the the pistons. 4 new pistons a rebuilt head and nes timing chain and gears and it is running again. I bought the car as a replacement for my present car ar I may sell it so I don't plan to drive it until I get the problems figured out.

No my drive is a 92 cavilier 2.2 5speed with 176k on it.

hey i had my lifters changed on my 93 grand am and ever since that tha oil pump had fawked up. but since i changed that my car hasnt had any oil pressure at all but when i checked the oil its full.cars at tha mechanic shop trying to figure it out. if i find out anything ill tell ya
