View Full Version : Regular vs Premium
Just read an interesting tidbit in the automotive section of the paper today. Joe d'Amato, The Car Doctor as his column is titled, says that running premium in cars designed for regular can lead to carbon build up and he therefore does not recommend it. What are The Old Guys comments on this?
I just KNOW this is going to cause a lot of discussion as it always does.

Quit poking with that stick! :D
I say people should run whatever makes them feel better. the psychological performance gain (or loss) will outweight any real effect anyway...

Quad4 HO = Premium (10:1 compression)
3.8 V6 = Regular. I follow mfr. specs.

Exactly! When the compression goes up, premium is usually the recommended fuel grade.
Manufacturers gives specs for a reason. There are exceptions, though, when it is advisable to move up a grade or 2 in octane.

There ya go!!! Killing the profits for all of the gas companies!!!
Seriously though......I run regular in mine. I don't notice any difference in performance or gas mileage at all when I run a higher octane.

the Quad 4 (regualr) in my GA says just regular....
...my 4.9 V8 requires premium.... it has no knock sensor, but only 9.5:1 compression.... I havn't tried anything less becuase.... I dunno, just havn't.....
..... I heard that running a higher grade can degrade performance as there is more detergints and stuff.... I dunno, I always went along with higher grade= better..... who knows though, for the whole $1.50 differnce at a fill up, just use what you want.... if a tank last you a week, think of all the other ways you have wasted a $1.50 or more etc...

Only the HO with it's 10:1 compression requires premium.
