what is the space for?

below the HVAC (by the way what does that stand for i know what it is but what does it stand for?) in my 96 there is a place for what looks like a removed ash tray. it has a small threaded hole a little right of the center.

i've been using this "cubby hole" to store things like mints or cigerettes. i sure would like to to know it's actually for heh heh

the little hole thats under the hvac is for the system monitor which came optional, i'm pretty shure thats what it is, thats what it is on the 89-91's, but i'm not shure about your years.
