View Full Version : How much boost can these things handle

I got my '88 Grand Am factory service manual in the other day. Cracked it open to the turbo wastegate overboost section and was a bit surprised at the numbers I found. Here's some quotes:

"A code 31 will set when the manifold pressure exceeds 185 kPa (26 psi) of boost for two seconds, and a code 33 (MAP sensor failure) has not previously been set."

"If an overboost does exist as indicated by the MAP sensor, the ECM will reduce fuel delivery to prevent damage to the engine."

Everything I've read before indicates this engine could only handle about 10psi. If the doesn't start lighting up warnings and cutting the fuel supply until 26psi then I'm wondering how much boost can be run on a regular basis.

I'm at 7psi right now with my wastegate actuator controlled by direct pressure from a connection to the outlet tube of the compressor. The stock wastegate actuator line is plugged off. I plan on taking it up to 10psi. I don't feel any need to go higher, just wondering how tough these engines are.

Well, I won't be trying to get any more boost for a while. I'm a little short on funds and my car is sitting with most of the electrical system removed. Thankfully it survived the theft attempt, now I just gotta get another steering column and a security system before I put all the electronics back in and run it again.

Found a place to get a real nice paging system for $135 and a new column is only $50 at the local pic-n-pull.
