My girlfriend has a 96 Grand Am with the Quad 4 motor. A couple days ago she was driving it and it was running fine. She went to leave work for lunch and it was running real rough and smoking real bad. I looked at it and the converter was bright red so today I took it to get the converter replaced. Well the smoke is gone but it is still running very bad. I replaced the fuel filter and spark plugs tonight. The problem is still there. She went ahead and drove it home and she said when she got home once again the converter was glowing red. Does anybody have any idea what the problem may be. Just so I know what to do without spending money on fixing things that wont fix it. I do know some about cars and know that it is obviously getting to much fuel. I just have no idea why. Please somebody help.
Thanks
Chris

O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold. If it's not reading right it's not sending the computer the correct info. So too much gas/heat could be being sent down it

Is the tail pipe plugged, the old stuff, stuff up someone exhaust trick.

Did you gap the plugs or just put them in?

When you pull the cover to change the plugs, you see a plastic cover with the 4 spark plug boots coming out of it. Look at the cover, is there cracks, dust trails on it.

The covers are offten a source of missfires if the plugs are right.

But I still think the exhaust is plugged is the latt cat got red hot and you replaced it and the new one is also doing it. Maybe strighten out a coat hanger and fill around up the exhuast pipe.

No such thing as a Quad4 in '96. It's either a pre-'96 car or it's a 2.4 TwinCam.

Sounds like it's running rich at any rate.
