I have a 2001 Grand Am GT... the last few times the I have filled my gas tank my MPG has been so inconsistant! I have gotta what I normally get around 20 MPG but sometimes I get only around 13 - 15 MPG why would it do that? I just replaced my fuel filter and double checked for leaks with no results so what could be wrong?

THIS IS WASTING A LOT OF MY MONEY AHHH!!!

... there are MANY factors that affect fuel mileage:

~ temperature outside
~ how much you have been idling the car
~ highway or city driving
~ 'quick' take offs
~ have you been using the windshield defrost (it uses the A/C)
~ normal maintenance (filters, plugs, etc)
~ grade of fuel being used
~ tire pressure
~ etc, etc, etc

start with the air filter and then pull your plugs and take a look at them to see what condition they are in, you might want to consider a tune up if not allready done.

I'd say its simply because its winter and its cold out. Its been under 20 degrees here for a week or two and my car gets worse mileage. When its cold out, the car spends more time in its warm up mode which uses alot more fuel. Also, alot of us start our cars prior to driving them to get the heat going this time of year.

Temps here have been near 0 for the last few weeks. My car gets about 23 mpg which is near what I usually get (25).

I say that its just the time of the year. Its winter and most of the people around here put there cars on to run before they drive. The tempature outside is colder for which it makes your car use up more fuel. It also depends on the fuel quality. I put the best stuff into my car.

Yea.. take a look at the temps. I notice, if Im driving around all day, it isnt so bad.. But the more you turn your car on and off and warm it up and all, the worse mileage you will get. Shit happens man.. but just be thankful thatt your winter doesnt last till april/may and starts in october.
