Hello,
just had my 1993 GA Quad 4 smashed and my garage is proposing a "very clean" 1994 GA V6 automatic with my insurance money.
I am aware that 1993 GA had a weak gasket problem but did not affect my car yet it did get scared.
Does my 1994 have such issues or weaknesses ?
Is this still a DOHC motor ?
thanks

It does not have head gasket issues, but the M engine code 3.1 V6 commonly called the 3100 V6 does have intake gasket issues. It is not a overhead cam engine, rather a overhead valve engine. I am assuming you are looking reliablity rather than performance, I would take that offer of the V6 GA.

Thanks for your reply 1
HYow bad is an intake gasket ?
Is it worse to repair than a head gasket ?
Speaking of performance, is this 3100 V6 much less performant than my Quad 4 ?
I am also looking for relioability too but still am wondering.

i no if u had a gt with a quad 4 i puts out 175 hp stock but if u had an se it was only 115hp stock i think the 3.1 has 155hp stock but it will give you more torque i think its all in all a better engine to have performance wise but thats my opion some people will argue that but if u had an se and not a gt this is no question the 3.1 is way better

Well it was an SE.
So I am better off with the 3100.

Ummm, Im going to have to disagree with that. I have lined up with a 96-98 SE with a 3.1, and while it great off the line, I can easily catch them after 40 MPH. Maybe I have the factory weirdo, but thats my experience.

Nope. There were 3 kinds of Quads. SOHC is 115 hp, but LO DOHC was like 150 hp. SE could come with either. GT could come with LO or HO.

I owned a Blue 2 door Grand Am se 3.1 before my 2003 G/T but i had so many problems with the 3.1 and they were...
Turning Light Solenoid... Replaced 3 times
Intake Mainfold Gasket... Replaced once
Starter... replaced once and a couple of inline fuses and a bunch more sh*t, but the list is too long.
Also many of the master cyliners of that year had problems but not quite enough to do a recall. I know this because mine went out and i smahed into the back of a brand new 2003 yukon xl. The lady that I hit was just taking it home from the dealership but she was cool and I paid her in cash to fix it without insurance getting involved. he he he :-)
As far as HEAD GASKET, nope not that i know of. As far as the v4 Dual overhead Cam vs. the 3.1 SFI... My brother had a 92 Ga se v4 SFI and I had the v6 3.1 and let me tell you son, the 3.1 smoked the v4. The only thing that i liked about my bros car is that it was much more reliable than my v6 ever was.

The 3100 and 2.3 run neck and neck. Our 3100 is quick off the line but once its hit second gear its a nothing story. Jay is right about 40mph cause that is when second gear hits.
the 3100 has 155hp and 185tq
The only quad 4 that ever had like 175hp was the quad 4 HO, it was put into GT Gran Ams like 92-94 I believe.

I'm not going to get into the "Which is better" conversation. I will tell you this, I have never heard of head gasket problems on any 60 degree V6. That includes the 2.8, 3.1, 3100, or the 3400. The lower intake manifold is a weak point on this engine. Replacing the gasket is a fairly involved job because of everything that has to be removed and reinstalled to get to it. If you want to stay with a Quad 4, then check out the Oldsmobile W41 Quad 4. From my understanding, it was the most powerful of all the Quad line.
