Well, my latest project is almost complete: my ported and polished MAF housing. All I have left to do is install it. :D

... to clarify what I meant about it working was the fact I bought it 'used', sold it to Shawn and that we haven't actually tried it yet ... other than that, if it doesn't work he'll just have to use the center section out of his original :)

I hope so too. If not, I still have my factory housing to put back in. :)
I know others who have done this same mod and have gotten good gains from it at the track.

Oh, I'd like to thank Kelly for the extra MAF to play with, and I'd like to thank Karen for putting up with a week's worth of cutting, grinding and polishing. You're the best, Babe!
:thanks:

is it something anyone can do? or do you need skills with machining?

Well, if you have a little mechanical ability and a Dremel tool, sure, you can do it ... just takes a little patience :)

thats sweet, id love to learn to do that and get a larger TB, wonder what the gains would be for it? Oh, I know this is a stupid question, but is that similar to what Pro-M does to its MAF?

this might sound stupid, but what if you dont make it perfectly round? im assuming you just grind it bigger

Well, in regards to the MAF, being PERFECTLY round will not not make a great deal of difference although you should try to keep it as circular as possible ... in regards to a TB though, it MUST be round in order for the throttle plate to seat properly so in other words, unless you have a Milling Machine you can't do the TB yourself :)

Anyone can do this with the right tools and some patience. With all my trial and error, it took me a bout a weeek to complete, although I could reproduce my results in a good evening now that I know what to do.
Tools used:
24-tooth/inch hacksaw
T-27 Torx-bit screwdriver
Flat-blade screwdriver
Dremel tool
60-Grit sanding drums
120-Grit sanding drums
Dremel brush cleaning wheels
Various polishing wheels
Dremel metal polish, Autosol metal polish
Don't bother trying to use a grinding bit. I spent several hours trying to grind the MAF with both metal and stone grinding bits, and all I managed to do was produce a lot of noise and destroy the grinding bits. Sanding it down works MUCH better.

I did the same thing on my MAF shawn, but I went a little more anal than you. I removed one half of the black plastic support. I then took a real small burr and smothed all of the edges of the remaining black plastic. Its not necessary, but I felt it was a little better than all those 90-degree sharp angles sticking out everywhere...
Funny thing is that we share the same MAF (f-bod) and I did notice some nice gains and better throttle response.

Wow, you really hogged the MAF out! Awesome!

Thanks guys. Rob, I don't want to admit it, but I considered doing that as well. I decided that it just wasn't worth the risk of damaging the sensor wires. I'm more than a little clumsy when working with small things like that.
I'll install it soon... As soon as the temps hit the other side of freezing that is.
I plan on doing a full write-up, similar to what I did with my alternator replacement instructions. Just give me some time. :D

OK, I've got a good start on the instructions. Check them out here:

nice instructions. I might just get brave enough to try mine. And of course, as soon as you get it installed, let us know if you see any improvements. Thanks!

Forgot to mention, it is installed. I put it in on Sunday afternoon. Since I don't have access to a Dyno or a track, I can't say for certain about performance gains, although the car does seem to pull a little harder in the upper RPMs.
But, with modifications like this, you can't expect miracles. but for a relatively cheap modification, any gain is worth it.
