so im on the freeway, my car starts choking...then it stops...starts choking then it stops...etc...then my check engine light comes on...so im installing my body kit, when i see my filter is sitting in my bumper off the intake, so i think to myself well thats obviously why it was choking, filter fell off and my car was sucking in a lot of air and some bad air, well i got the filter back on the intake and now its really secure, eventually my check engine light went off....so im driving, then it starts choking again, then my light comes back on again, next day, check engine light turns off...my car is fine, later chokes and check engine light comes back on again, so what do you guys think i need to do?..why is it still choking?...do you guys think that there is bad air in my engine or something?...anyways, please let me know what you guys think i need to do cause i feel like im really hurting my engine, thanks

Some dirt and such may have gotten up in there while the filter was off. Dunno for sure but may be a possibility.

"do you guys think that there is bad air in my engine or something"
once air goes in, it almost come out immedently. try cleaning the TB., or maybe the PCV and EGR. not sure though

Go to autozone or a mechanic and do a diagnostic check. If your check engine light came on, the computer stores the code and will tell you what is going wrong then go from there. Id go to autozone its free

autozone dosent do it anymore, and mechanics are gay...all they want to do is rip people off...anyways, i did have a mechanic look it up though when it was on, and it said something about the MAF, someone told me that there is dirt probably stuck on the screen of the MAF and that i should clean it out, so im gonna give that a try once it stops raining down here

Check the PCV also. There cheeper than a MAF, it just pulls up out of the vaulve cover. Shake it, there is a little ball like thing in there you should hear rattle.
Just a thought and not too hard to check.

The ECU is not aware if you have a filter on or not.
I'm gonna vote MAF. It's possible it sucked in debris that damaged the delicate sensor. The MAF determines how much fuel to dump in based on how much air is entering. If it is damaged, that would explain the "choking".
