HI,
I just bought a 2004 Grand Am Gt. Everytime I start it up there is a knocking noise from the engine. It sounds like a lifter. After a few seconds the noise goes away. I can't get any answers from the Pontiac dealership. Is this normal? Im thinking maybe the oil pressure has to build up first. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem ?
Thanks!

Can't be normal for a brand new car.. I'd keep on bugging the dealership until they do something about it

Does the sounds goes away after it is warm up. I know our 3100 malibu sounds like a small diesel on cold start-up.

Yes, the sound goes away after a few seconds. It only happens at start up, then it goes away.

Yeah mine does the noise too but its a 1998 with 59,000 miles. A 2004 should run perfectly..

Sounds like good ol' piston slap to me. Being brand new GM MIGHT do something about it but dnt get youre hopes up.

Our 2004 SE has this same noise at cold start-up, it fully silences after about 25 seconds. The dealer said this is piston slap and is normal with the short skirt pistons and will not hurt anything. Once the oil film is normalized, the sound stops.

true but there's no excuse for brand new cars having that problem yet. Also, if it was so normal, you'd think GM would tell you before buying the car... oh wait, people won't like that, so they wouldn't buy it. I think GM should fix all the engines with the problem :)

I have it with my 99 GT and I have close to 49,000 miles.if someone hears it I bet they think my engine is just about toast, but it goes away after a few minutes. It is embarrassing as h*ll!
There is a lawsuit against GM concerning piston slap in California.I have sent info to them and they did get back to me wanting me to send a list of info to them about it.Anyone wanting to try to get help with the issue can get in touch by e-mail or phone.Nothing may happen, but at least we can say we tried!
Their e-mail is msh@classcounsel.com

True , it's the design of the piston skirt or lack of any that causes the noise . In an effort to lighten the piston and lower friction they went a bit overboard shortening the skirt .The lack of skirt makes the piston rock in the bore a little till it expands a bit to take up enough clearance for it to stop . Making it too tight to stop this is not good either , creating too much friction when it does expand . If the noise goes away in less than a minute , it's considered normal and GM doesn't want to do anything about it . I can see how someone would be unhappy when they buy a new car and it knocks though . Gm should change their slogan to " Like a Knock "

 Yep....they all rattle a little when you first start them up. My dad had a 3800 in his Buick, and it did it too. My GA has always had a little "piston slap", if that's what you want to call it, when it first starts up. Actually mine sounds a little more like noisy lifters. At any rate the noise is inherent in GM's V6's.....I wouldn't worry about it.
