I'm currently running a 12 "Sony Xplod sub with a RF Punch 500W amp. I don't wanna buy a new amp b/c the RF is SOLID. I either wanna go with 2 12s (250W each) or go up to a single 15. I'm thinking with 500W going to a 15" sub, that would give me more "thump". What do ya'll think? Thanks!

IMO, 15" subs are just too loose sounding for my likes. I need something with a sold, tight bass sound. If you're going for pure bass, go with a 15", if you want to keep some tightness, but get more bass out of your system, go with 2 12". Also, some nice 6 1/2's up front will give your system a nice, even sound. :D

i agree with him. if you're wanting bass to be heard go with the 15, if you're wanting tighter bass go with the 2 12s. but of course i've got an 18 in emily's daily driver. it's not as punchy as a 12 you can tell on songs you know, but it works

Well I had two 10" soundstream in my car with about ohhh 270 rms to each and sounded great.
I took them out to try my 15" soundstream ( same model jus bigger ) and pumped about 900rms into it.

IMO I think they are veeeeeeeery comparible in the 'tightness' of the bass. Mind you the 15 will eat them in the low end, high volume area.
I know im putting waaaaaaaay more power into the 15 but i think the 15 ( in my set up ) destroys the 10's all around.

People say that 15's are loose etc, but not in my case. If i throw on lets say Metallica - One, it'll make ya sick in the back seat.

But the 15 looseness, i dont totally agree, i guess it depends on your brand, power, box, set up etc.

Ok . . if I go for two 12s, where can I find a dual box with a slanted back (to go against the seat) and a flat (or slanted) front? They make them for singles, but not for duals. Would I have to make it myself?

If I stick with Alpine or Sony subs, would 250W per sub be enoug to push 'em? Thanks!!

EDIT: Keep in mind that my current sub is a 12" Sony Xplod. I haven't had any performace issues, but then I haven't owned any others subs. Would a different sub sound different at 500W than the Sony?

See your box all depends on the sub(s) you get, all have different specs, and if you go buy a generic box, its not sized or tuned for your particular sub(s).

If i were you i'd take a stab at making it.

As for your Sony, if thats all you got great, but if you can afford something better GO FOR IT.
I think alot of brands are jus 'name only' nowadays.
Alot of the bigger names are all mass-produced.

If you can find them, go with 2 12" Alpine Type E's or S's... That amp you have will be more than enough to push them. Plus, you'll most likely be able to get 2 for around $120 US.

The best thing to do is just make it yourself. Its pretty cheap. It cost my about $40 to make a dual 12" sealed box, and I still have a 2'x4' piece of 3/4" MDF and half a "can" (:S i dont remember what is really called) or Polyurethane Adhesive.

This way, you can stick to the exact specs ur subs need, and make it look the way you want.

The box I built was for my old 89' Dodge Daytona and I made it sit flush with the top of the back seats and slope down. Fit perfectly, looked good and sounded good.

a 15" will blow a 12 away on the low end, but on the same token a 12" will have a little more high end bass than the 15". and you're right it depends on the enclosure. but on the other hand, it's harder to get a 15" to move as fast as a 10 or 12. i love metallica - one too. put in a song that has some fast moving bass and listen to it on a system with a 15 and then on a system with a 12 or 10. you'll see a difference. the bass notes will kind of start running together.

building a sealed box is easy if you have any kind of carpentry skills at all. making it slanted will be the hardest part.

Yes your right, but all in all, for the average listener who has a few subs etc , their whole idea is to have a much bass as possible, and wouldnt be concerned if the 15 is sooooooooooo slightly off. Usually the bass for these listeners is too over whelming, and think bigger #'s mean bigger bass, which is untrue.

See myself im rather picky with my sound, thus i spent most of my money on my components, but i also have the ability to cream my ears if necessary. :D

i think that UGAkilla would benefit more with a couple 12's.

Heres a good song with nice tight bass
See what your system can do

I played this with the stock sound system that came in my car (factory speakers and HU) and it kicked a$$

now, not so much :p

Thank you all so much for your advise and recommendations. Unfortunately, my fiancee has reminded me of a promise that I made her that I was not to buy anything for my car (except for maintainance items) until we get married. That means I won't be getting any new toys until summertime. Oh well. But after that, I'll probably end up getting a pair of Alpine Type E or S and building my own box.

Crutchfield has a deal, if you buy a pair of of Alpine 12" Type E's, you can get them for $150 for the pair.

Lebult: Why does that song not kick ass in your current setup?

:thumbup2:

Good choice on the Type E's... I had Type R's before, and those things kicked so much ass.... Made my 95' rattle soooo bad, but when the trunk was open and the windows down, it rocked! And, the Type E's are also great subs... They're tight when you need them to be, but also hits the lows pretty damn hard.

I dunno. For some reason, my factory speakers havnt had as much bass after I put in my new HU.
I dont have subs in my Grand AM, but in my other car, this song still kicks ass :D

the type e's are awesome and if ur dont want to spend much get them and put them in a sealed box. i hit 142 db with the type es so they can be loud if need be but they are also very tight sounding subs. i have had mine for a year and have had no problems with them. i have had them wired at 2 ohms the entire time too even though they are 4 ohm subs.

Well, like I said . . . I can't get the Type E's b/c of the promise I made my fiancee. Unless someone wants to give me a gift, I'll just stick with my Sony. :(

you could run the 4 ohm subs at 1 ohm if you wanted to actually. ohm load only matters to the amp :)
