Okay, I have heard that the 2.2 is hard to get a good sound out of, so does anyone know of any mufflers that would give it a nice deep tone?

Thats what im waiting to find out. I'm going to go with a dual exhaust setup but I dont want to spend the money and then have it sound bad

Dynomax Super Turbo, melo sound, nice and smooth. I had a Magnaflow and it sounded brutal inside the car, IMO.

Did you take out the resonator?

No, I put in a Maganaflow hi-flo resonator which sounded like crap, you could hear it underneath the car. I yanked that and put another one in, now it sounds great!
Personally, I'd leave the stock resonator in.

Well I got dibs on a magnaflow muffler and I think I am going to leave my stock resonator on. I hope it sounds better and not like a pissed off lawmower.

Try it with the OE resonator and you may like it, not my taste tho.

02eco how much did you exhaust setup cost you? or did you just get the tips and mufflers?

No its a catback. It was a while ago but the tips, piping & labour was $450 with tax. There are a few more bends than just a pipe coming over the rear axel. The muffler sits way up and you can't even see it kneeling behind the car, like you can with the OE muffler.
I bought the muffler seperately from Speedy. Here's a tip, BUY DYNOMAX MUFFLERS FROM SPEEDY! Speedy uses Walker Mufflers and Dynomax is a sub-division of Walker Muffler. Walker produces all of the OE replacement mufflers for Speedy. Therefore Speedy receives a huge volume discount from Walker, which is passed on to you. The same Dynomax Super Turbo (Camaro Application) was $80 more at a performance muffler shop. I then brought the muffler to the performance muffler shop for the install. But call a Speedy to see if I'm right and to be sure. Hope that helps.:D

So the Dynomax does it have a deep sound or am I looking at the normal 4L sound? I'm trying to find a cat back system that will give me the deepest sound without being tingy. any ideas? you said magnaflow wich one?

I wouldn't say the Dynomax is a deep sound but more smooth and not loud. The Magnaflow straight thru mufflers are much deeper and loud on an Ecotec IMO. I can't remember which Magnaflow I had but the number 14812 seems to ring a bell but I could be wrong.
Personally, I'd go Dynomax on an Ecotec, smoother and very little interior resonance. The Magnaflow sounds great on GM V6/V8 engines but I think they sound like crap on an Ecotec, at least in the interior.:D

This past week I had a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler (1 in, 2 out)from Summitracing.com and a pair of Black Chrome Ractive exhaust tips put on my car. The look is perfect. The sound is a little bit too loud in the car. I'm gonna dynamat the trunk to see if that helps. The only part of my exhaust that was replaced was the very rear, but it still feels like the powerband moved up just slightly. I'd post a picture, but I don't know how.

I would love to see what that looks like and sounds like. Did is cost alot? and you said it's only the rear part? you didn't do a whole cat back?

The system that I put on cost about $47 plus handling for the muffler, just under $80 for the exhaust tips, and $100 for the labor at the muffler shop. I didn't do a complete cat-back because I didn't want to lose the low rpm power that this small engine makes. Most people go overboard when they make changes to their exhaust systems. By just changing to a free-er flowing muffler I already lost a tiny bit of low rpm torque. If I had changed the entire exhaust system I would probably have had to go back to the muffler shop to put my original pipes back on. Big pipes can give you alot of high rpm horsepower gains, but for a daily driver you're not gonna want to spend alot of time revving the engine to 6000 rpm to get into your power band. Don't listen to people who talk about horsepower gains without mentioning torque losses down low. My next upgrade is gonna be the lightened crank pulley from Hi-Rev Motorsports. It frees up a few horses without having any negative powerband effects.
Forgot - You can look at Black Chrome exhaust tips at Ractive.com

So it's a Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler eh? does it have a deep sound or kinda sound really high like you hear most civic's?
EcotecFiveSpeed
06-18-2004, 09:56 AM
Its a deeper sound than most civics, but civics have smaller motors and rev higher than our cars.
Troggs
06-18-2004, 10:08 AM
it sounds deeper eh? you don't by any chance have a sound clip do you? and also where did you get your exhaust from ? I heard you can get dynmax from speedy.

I paid about $46 plus $9 handling plus free shipping from summitracing.com. I can't do sound clips, but I'm sitting at the computer trying to put some pictures online.

Well I got my exhaust on..I have a post about it in the Non GA member's rides. I like it. It doesn't sound ricy at all and is a nice deep tone. Even at higher RPMs. I wish I had a mic..I would get some sound clips.

I'm trying to find a good exhaust aswell. Like your what magnaflow did you get? Also you changed the pipes and everything too right?
ironray75
06-22-2004, 09:30 AM
I don't know which Mag I got..I got it from a friend who bought it and didn't like it. And I didn't have to chage the pipes since my eco already had the 2.25 piping.
Troggs
06-22-2004, 09:32 AM
Oh yea? So pretty much just put the muffler and the tips you changed? Well if you ever find out please tell me. I wonder what my pipes are?
ironray75
06-22-2004, 09:35 AM
Well my muffler already had a tip on it..It came like that. So all I had to do was add some piping and the muffer and it was good...Man, sounds nice now!

Anything less than 8 cylinders is going to sound like crap no matter what you do to it.
Instead of sound like a swarm of farting flies, you'll sound like a swarm of farting flies in a barrel.

That's pretty funny. Well I beg to differ on your opinion. I have a magnaflow muffler on mine and in no way does it sound bad or ricy.

I had the same opinion but I've heard quite a few 6 bangers that really surprised me. Guys that have been racing for years, just as I have, were very surprised at what my six sounds like with the Magnaflows. It's not loud by any means and sounds very similar to a small block eight.
The sound actually has more to do with the firing order than with number of cylinders. A 3400 has a very distinct sound. It's pretty smooth at idle because of the 1-2-3-4-5-6 firing order.

That's simply opinion and purley subjective. I've heard lots of V6 engines, especially 3100/3400's that sound great but again it's all opinion.:D

I got magnaflow 2 and everyone pretty much says the same thing. "That sounds mean as hell dude!" Low rumbly and raspy. Not super loud and ricey. A lot of people think that I have the V6. I have 2 1/2" piping so I don't know if that would affect the sound comapred 2 the 2 1/4" or not. Trust me if U got the ecotec U won't be dissapointed with magnaflows.
