Ever since I bought this 78 project truck, I have been looking at headers, exhaust, etc. for it. I have noticed that parts for our cars are SO EXPENSIVE! What I mean is- I can buy a NEW 350 engine WITH a SC for about 3600. A SC alone for our cars is about 4200. Headers for a 350 run about 150-250. Ours are about 700! I know the demand for our cars is much lower but sheesh!

SBC has been around for so long that every one makes parts for it, the small block was produced for 52 years so it has been in many cars form a suburban to a vette to a caprice... and when you get thet much developent time and that many SBCs out there parts tend to get cheaper... with their V6s and I4 they develop a new one every 2- 4 years... so its hard for aftermarket companies to keep up... although it seems thats all gonna change with the ECOTEC there puting that motor in every new car they design... the only new V8 design from gm is the LS2...

Ay i noticed that to when looking for parts for my 83 camaro. Exhaust systems are like 200-500 (our car 600-900) Headers that are really good were 150, (our car 500) its insane

Demand and supply. Not enough demand to make for a supply.

our cars also have more stupid lil things that have to be taken into account, besides the obvious quantity/supply demand side of things.

the 350 is a no brainer type deal. There's no real emissions devices needed, actually it's all pretty straight forward.

Our cars and motors need to have special attention for emissions, tight fitment, R&D for a motor that is not a dime a dozen. heh..

okay supply and demand ... and our niche market IS small. Bigger than a Mercury Cougards though..

Thats why i love it though. The parts are so expensive that not to many have them so when i say i have them and can prove it it makes up for the money ive spent on them.

yeah i know. i built a 524hp and 536lb. ft. engine for right at $7,000.....try and do that with any other motor  i'm about to get my factory motor rebuilt (already supposed to have started, but that's another story) for about $500 and that's including the guys labor.

i can buy a brand new crate motor that will bolt into my truck with no problems for about $1800, or get a carb controlled one for about $1400. i love having a 350 because like you said, parts are so cheap.

and you can build them any way you want form FI to carbs to duel carbs any displacement from 305-454 (yes you can bore and stroke a SBC to 454 its just not too safe) you can bulid them for torque horse power... roots blower, vortec supercharger, twin turbo..... i really want a V8....

well ACTUALLY you can get one to be bigger than a 454. but that's with the addition of superchargers, boring you're block out as much as possible and etc. they're fun and cheap to build. you can squeeze REAL large numbers out of a 350ci.
