View Full Version : Modifying a 2.4L Engine

Hey, i was thinking about doing some modifications to my engine in my 96 GA. I was contemplating a new CAI, ECU Modification, and premium spark plugs to burn up all the gas and air that i've increased the flow of. Also maybe a Flowmaster 50 Series w/ some kind of tip. The only two things are that the engine is a small displacement 2.4L, and it has over 100,000 miles on it. Will installing these upgrades put to much stress on my motor? Also if you have a Flowmaster 50 Series on a 2.4L or similar tell me if it sounds like a "rice" car or not. Thanks ahead of time for the info.

Well the flowmast is not a straight through design. It has baffles and stuff in it beause it is made for a V-8. Some people have them on their 2.4's and like them. As far as the CAI I would go with induction dynamics. I have that intake and am very satisfied with it.

i put a 40 series on my fiance's 2.4 and i like the sound of it. the 50 is more quiet. the 40 is a 2 chamber and the 50 is a 3 chamber. if you've taken good care of your motor the mileage shouldn't be a big factor. my truck had about 175,xxx and i was still modding it for speed lol. but around 200,xxx i started taking all the speed goodies off. for plugs i think we've decided that the ac delco's that came in the motor from GM are the best bet. or maybe some of the NGK (iridiums i believe).

Recommendations: start with exhaust, then intake.

"chips" or ECU mods do not yield much in performance gains. There are better mods for the money.

Also, better spark plugs will NOT create a gain in performance. (unless your old ones are shot)

Flowmaster can sound raspy on the 2.4. It's still a decent choice, but look into straight-thru glass/steel packed mufflers, such as Borla, Dynomax, etc.

the flowmaster on emily's 2.4 is not anywhere near as raspy as SLP. at first it had a little bit of a rasp to it, but after a couple weeks it went away and its kind of a deeper sound now

Yea, SLP sounds awful on a 4 banger.

yea i agree with the last two.Exhaust first. Our 2.4 are quick cars,i was very suprised with my 1/4 mile time after i stuck my AEM intake on and had my custom cat-back exhaust, went from mid 17's,pretty stock,to high to mid 16's with the things i got now.Still rather have the 3.8 SFI in it tho:D

so matts, the 40 series is louder than the 50, but which has a deeper lone? Also how long of a tip would i need, and i'm guessing it requires welding huh?

dfx866, check out the 2.4L section here...theres alot of great info if you want to go deep with the engine!

by the way Goldfever, i was looking at the CAI from Induction Dynamics, but what I want to know is if the CAI be safe for winter driving? Wisconsin has that downside to it (for car driving at least).

Yeah well I cannot tell you anything from experiance about winter driving because I live in southern Louisiana, but Induction Dynamics has tested these intakes in Canada. I think I remember seeing something like that. If I am just making this up someone please correct me.

i dont know on a 4 or 6 cylinder, but on a V8 the 50 usually has a more mellow, laid back tone to it. it has the distinct flowmaster sound to it, but not as....abundant as the 40 series :) help any? and yes, it requires welding

No you are right they are from Canada, i am saving up to get one from them, but not too happy bout the 265 dollar pricetag, since they are from Canada

I'm a fan of displacements less tha 3.0L along w/ the words inline along w/ the number of cyl's.

I won't knock the 5.7L though.

2.3HO is the original GM 4cyl of power tho.

I got a Ractive intake system for my car. We have the same one, by the way. I got an extremely noticable increase in power, just not as much in gas mileage. Although, I hear that an Iceman is the way to go. A bit more, but I guess its worth it. Ractive isnt too bad either, Im satisfied.

I had a weapon R intake for my car that was crap. So I scrapped it and made my own bad ass intake with a foam element filter. I have an ebay no name muffler. I am Looking forward to get the new Apexi muffler that has a valve that opens only when you get on it. I saw it in a mag think it comes out in may or april.

Bosch Platinum plus 4 plugs did increase my spunk a little bit
As for exhaust for a 2.4 i would stick to a straight through design to avoid high pitched honda style brands, i own a psudo, which sounds pretty mean.

We'll never sound like a high pitched honda. Displacement does count for something... sound.
