You explain to me where you're going to fit 4 12" subs into you car, then I'll comment on what subs to get...

it could be done easily, especially with some planning.
there's so many different kinds of subs you can go with, and it all depends on how much money you're willing to spend. the better the 12s you get the more power they're gonna need. the more power they need the more amps you need, and you more amps you need the more money it's gonna take to get them up and running.......whew, that almost sounds confusing :P.
but you'd get better results out of 2 12s with a bunch of space and gobs of power to those 2 than having 4 with not enough space and not as much power:)
if it were me i'd go with 2 or 3 kicker L7 solobarics. they're fairly cheap and can give some pretty impressive numbers in the right enclosure. JL 13" W7's look pretty promising from their specs, but price is a key element right there.

are you actually going into competition?
its starts getting pretty pricey, because its not as simple as sticking them in boxes and calling it a day. The judges would laugh at you, hahahaha
You could fit 4 12" comp subs, but it would most likely cover your entire trunk floor, and you'd need to find a place for the amps.
either with 4 or 2 weaker amps or 1 gigantic amp, but the bigger and more powerful the amp, the more expensive (its sometimes cheaper to get 2 amps, than 1)
As for the TYPE of Subs, I'm not too sure. I always take SQ over SPL, unless you're just going for looks, then I could help you out.
I've always run Infinity's, from the reference series, to the top Kappa Perfects. I just ordered 2 10" Kappa Perfects VQ with the M3D cones :D

i already figured out how i was going to fit 4 12s in the trunk what i was going to do is to have a custom mdf/fiberglass box siting lenght wise from the front of the trunk to where my back seat is and then on either side of the box i was going to have the amps sitting diagonaly toward the subs and have the subs face the top of the trunk lid the first two subs would be facing diagonally towards the lid and the other two would be faceing straight up at the lid

It all comes down to money... A custom enclosure like what you're talking about is gonna cost you a pretty penny just by itself... Your best bet, like matt said, would be to get 2 nice 12" subs and a nice, powerful mono amp... You'll probably get better sound that way than with 4 12", but if you're going for competition, then do what matt said and get 3 L7 solobarics (even tho I'm not a big fan of kicker)

well JL would be a little costly. and i know plenty of people that have fairly impressive numbers from solobaric. a guy in a new civic with 2 L7 12s hit a 148.? a few months ago at a competition. and that was with around 500 watts going to each. they'll handle twice that if you treat them right.

Yea, you gotta realise that for what your talking about your looking at around 5g's. Personally, im a fan of JL and would go with the 2 13W7's with 2 1000/1 amps. That is definatly a very powerful system. Put those in your custom ported enclosure and you will be looking at losing most of your trunk space. Also realise, your car is gonna rattle to smitherines unless you start laying down the sound deadener

yeah, before you start anything invest in some dynamat. extreme is the best, but a basic trunk kit will do wonders. and rich, i'm not knocking JL, but i would pit 2 L7s against those JLs. i'm not saying the kickers would win for sure, but kicker's aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be. and JL isn't anything to laugh at either.
i just think the solobarics would be a little better because they are cheaper, take up less space, handle a pretty damn decent amount of power, and give some pretty impressive numbers if done right :)

See because im partial........................to soundstream ( yes i know they were sold but still) .
If were talking about money, needed power etc.
I' go with the (2) SoundStream T2-10" SPL Tarantula subs (12's if you can find'em, afford them). These puppies are dual 1ohm voice coil. To make it easier you'd want an amp that the specs show low rms rating ( for comps ), but will bridge down too ridiculous low ohms and true rms, and be stable all day long, like an older orion hcca 250, 800x1 at 1ohm ( soooo underated ) but for comps its only considered a 50x2, the older ones are great ( aka cheater amps ). No prob to find one on ebay at a budget price.
Those subs retail 159 ea.
Jl and kicker are good, dont get me wrong, but you pay a tonne for them, especially the JL.

You can sometimes be lucky and find a great deal on either JL or kicker... I've seen the 12" L7s 2 for only $189.99... If I wasn't partial to Alpine, I would've def. went with them over my Type E's, but I also didn't have the kind of power those babies require.

id stay away from powerbase subs......but if i were you id go Alpine and get the type r's, they sound really good but you hafta make sure you have enough power to run them.

He can't spend that much... If he's gonna go Alpine, he'll have to stay with the E's or S's... The S's are practically the same exact sub, just make sure you get the same Ohm rating on each sub... When my friend got S's, he wasn't paying attention and picked up a 2 and a 4 ohm...

What organization and which class were you interested in competing?

yea, the problem with alpine is the different ohms loads for each subs, you gotta make sure you get it right. Hehe dont worry matts, I know your not knocking me of anything. As a matter of fact ive never heard L7's. Ive heard the W7's and just fell in love with them, thats why I like them. I bet if I heard the L7's I would like them too. If you do decide to go alpine you gotta realise that even the type-r's arnt all that powerful. That was the deciding factor for me, the JL's were just more powerful than even the Type-R's. Another thing is there is a significant difference between E,S, and R's. Ive beat out a kid with 4 10" E's in a HB and he wasnt too happy with that, and I know type-R's can match my system.

yeah, i know a guy with 2 L7 15s that was running only a couple dBs behind a guy with 20 (yes, thats twenty) 10s. the guy with kicker had a 154 and the other guy with the tens had a 158. i know, once you get up there that high 4 dB is a BUNCH, but you'd think something with 20-10s would at least break 160.
with more subs the general public will THINK you're louder than you really are. i tell people i have an 18" and their jaws drop, but i got my ass handed to me by a 15 and one comp. and at the same comp there were several people out hit me with 2 12s. that was at the bottom of the totem pole for my system .......i gotta have an excuse lol.

i have 4 12' pyramids just mount two of them against the seats facing the interior with a clear backed box and two in the spare tire well in a custom enclosure. id go with 2 1000watt amps to power it one per box and custom mount them on the sides of the trunk. alos put stiffining capacitors on the amps so your bass notes dont drop off
matts
03-13-2004, 09:50 PM
i would have said mount all 4 facing the inside of the trunk. 2 behind the seat and one on each side cocked facing the back of the opposite side of the car. then have the amps and acc. mounted on the bottom of the trunk

You keep saying stuff like that, but we have no idea what you want to do... If you want a custom fiberglass trunk, you're looking at mucho money. If you only need a little bit fiberglassed, you might be able to do it yourself, but it's messy and if you get the resin on you, it's never going to come off.
Let us know exactly how much you're looking at spending on this, how long you want it to take, what exactly you're thinking of getting (how many subs... stuff like that) and we can give you a better idea of something "different" to do.

You could also put them in a W shaped box, and my friend just happens to have one for sale.:D

Nah, its not that bad. I've gotten resin on me dozens of times, and its always come off. A little Orange Gojo and you're set.
Fiberglassing isn't nearly as hard as some people make it out to be
