Well I have been hearing rumors from people that the ecotec is virtually indestructible. Anyone know any truth to this?

the eco came out in 2002, I need more time before i say it is indestructible. I herad something about the timing chains breaking on them

It debute in north america in 1999 in the Saturn L-Series. But was around before that in the Opel Division which is a European GM division. One of the Vehicles that my dads company uses is a 1999 Saturn L200 with the Ecotec engine so far over 200,000 miles and no engine problems to report

I havent heard of the timing chains braking. But anything is possible. GM stands by the Ecotec engine and has proven its performance and reliability on the track. You have the Sunfire drag car You have the Red Line ION Coupe which broke the land speed record and a few other vehicles. GM proved that the stock engine could be increased to 250hp and remain reliable. There are still some critics though.

i have only heard once of a timing chain braking. but i have read about huge horse power that gm has been getting out of them with almost all stock internals.

Thats true and not true. Its true that to get the 1,000 HP that the engine can create it isnt stock nor anywhere near it. But it can get 250 HP using the stock internals which isnt bad for a 4 cyl.
here is a chart i found quite awhile ago that shows what needs to be changed at what horsepower http://www.year2032.com/ecotec.htm

well a friend of mine has blown 2 ecos allready , 1 the nitrous solinoid stuck open and flooded the motor with nitrous

#2 went from to much boost not enough fuel , and a idle problem

and another cavalier guy has pushed his eco to 300 or so with 24 psi and lots of fuel

like anything , if you do not get the right mix it will not last

there was a problem in canada with the timing chains , and a problem all around with certain block having bad cylinders

for the most part the motor is as strong as any motor out there , but all have there limits

Right and of course nitrous isnt the best way to boost any engine. Expecially if not done right such as this case. Timing chains have not been an issue recently i have heard no real complaints recently being filed. Same with the blocks but there will be flaws just because of the manufacturing processes
