View Full Version : New Toy...
Well Since I am getting money back from taxes, and planning on a long road trip to Seattle in a little over a month with my car, I decided to purchase an addition to the system today...

Sony 10 Disc _CD Changer with MP3 capability, plugged right into the back of my existing deck, witha control cable (c-bus) and rca cable for the signal. Took about 1 hour to install, works slick and best of all MP3!!! made up a few discs tonight, what a differnce that makes being able to change the amount of cds i carry with me on ratio of 6 to 1 at least!, tis a little slow when it loads up a mp3 disc but only at first onces its seem the folder tree its good and quick. After the trip I will be mounting it a little differently.

Wow, congratulations, Blake! Very nice! I've been wanting an MP3 changer for a while now, there's just been other things higher up on my wish list.
Great job on the install!

With a good quality ripper and MP3 encoder, and encode at a high bitrate and it's tough to hear the difference. There is some loss, but not enough to worry about, IMO. :)

Nice. I'm swapping my setup(s) around a bit, I think an MP3 changer is finding it's way into the 95 very soon.
I've always been a huge car MP3 fan. I was even on a waiting list in summer 2000 to get the one of the first 2 CD based in-dash MP3 headunits. (although the Aiwa was a POS)

Exactly. good encoding = cannot tell. I highly recommend VBR (variable bit rate) encoding. It is superior to fixed rate encoding since it increases bit rate as needed to maintain original quality integrity, while keeping file size down. I've done many tests myself, mid-high quality VBR is my fav. I can fit 10-12 full ablums per CD-RW. Good stuff.

yes you have a point shawn, BUT mp3s do take away from some of the music. will the average person be able to tell a difference? highly doubtful. i'm in NO way downing mp3s, my headunit plays mp3s and i've got a kenwood keg with a 40 gig cartridge for it. mp3s make up 99% of my music i listen to in my truck.

Exactamundo. :) Myself I'm a stickler for sound Q, and I've noticed a huge difference in the quality of different MP3 encoders. I like LAME the best so far, I use CDex as a front-end and ripper.
I've gone as far as doing it in a 2-step process; ripping to .WAV with any ripping program (I used CDex and a few others), then using LAME (with the RazorLame front-end) to encode them to MP3. The differences in SQ weren't enough to justify the amount of time it took to encode an entire CD though.
Oh well, the days of my lugging 120-240 audio CDs with me in the car are over. I put a hundred songs on a CD and I'm set. :)
Anyways, back on-topic. :D

too many steps  I use cdex and rip to 128k and sometimes 192k, I like to save space :) I think 320 is overkill, a 3min song is like 8megs when it could be 2megs with 128k.
back on topic
I want one :(

Love multidisc changers....I have a Pioneer head unit that has the capability but if I got one with the mp3 option, would it still work? I would assume so if the disc changer is the one playing the songs.Guess I answered my own question:???:
