i have 3 jl 8w6's hooked up to my jl 500/1 and i was wondering if i were to get a 15" subwoofer too that it would sound weird, or would it be alright. I mean i hear people say not to mix 10" and 12" together, but would it be alright to mix 8" and 15"? When i say this, i mean the 8"s would be hooked to the 500/1 and the 15" would be hooked to a new amp.
Thanks
ALex

i disagree with birdhouse. youve got enough variation there, as long as your x-overs are set right youll have an awesome sounding system. try to get a 15w6 version 1 to match yours and youll be sportin a rocking system.

It would definately be a possibility to mix an 8 inch and a 15inch, but you would definitely need to have a top quality install.

The 8 inch would need to be properly tuned to the right frequency by enclosure size to ensure it maintains midbass (50hz+) frequencies only, which would be the optimal operating range for this size woofer, and the 15 inch on the other hand would need to handle the Xtreme sub freqiencies (50hz below) making sure not to interfere with the other woofers in the system. On top of all that, you would need to make sure the proper roll of rates between woofers are set, AND the proper crossover frequency rates are selected.

think of it in this manner, would you rather have a 2 way component system up front, or a 3 way system? take out the factors of $$$, on hand amplifier power, and space, and I guarantee you many will say that the 3 way system not only allows you more "headroom", but it keeps the system more crisp, and allows you to FINE tune the system more precisely, and to your likes/dislikes....... basically it will give you more control. It keep certain frequencies dedicated to the best woofer for that application

I cant stress enough how important tuning will be for you. Whether it be on your own, or with the aid of an install shop, chances are you will probably build a couple of enclosures before you actually get the "optimal" set up of your taste. Woofers of different sizes are optimal again for the aforementioned reasons, and are fabulous when tuned right, its those that get rushed, and dont do the proper homework that end up saying it cant, and shouldnt be done ;)

keep me informed, as there are very few souls willing to take a task on like this
