I have an opportunity to buy two 94' Grand Am's for extremely cheap. One is a 2dr. Quad 4 with the engine on it's way out but everything else is good on it and the other is a 4dr. with a 3.1L V6 that's been in an accident. I want to put the 3.1L in the 2dr but I'm not sure what's all involved in this swap so I wondered what needs to be changed and switched over. Both are automatic. Please let me know ASAP because I want to start this swap before April if possible.

why is it too much work. What's involved. I will be working with both complete cars and I am mechanically inclined so that won't be a problem.

I was planning on having to change all that anyway but do you know if I'm going to have to go as far as changing CV shafts and the whole nine yards or just what you've listed.

yea.. check them out 1st i know mine went bad when i changed motors. i dont know if it was from the power gain or what. not to be an a$$ , but i think it would be easyer to find a 94 GAGT or Se there cheap, and some are in decent shape
and if needed do a 3100 to 3100 motor swamp thats what i did

oh and the cluster on the Quad4 will not work on the 3100. the ECM will not read it

The only reason I'm thinking about doing this is because I'm laid off and sick of sitting on my ass twiddling my thumbs so I can get the 2dr. for $300 bucks and the 4dr. for free because the guy just wants to get rid of it and I might be able to make a decent car out of the two of them. So time isn't much of an issue I just wondered how hard it would be and what would have to be changed

well.... i guess if you have the time and LOTS of money it could be done... i think it would be cool to see someone do the converson. Have anything else you want to ask why your doing the swamp just let me know
good luck :)

before you do it beef up the 3100. :)

Well I'm going to have two complete cars and the 3.1L car was in an accident so the only thing good on it is the drive train so I will be getting everything under the hood and all the wiring and computer and everything with it.
As for beefing up the 3.1L before dropping it in what do you suggest that wouldn't cost much right now.

well today must be your lucky day i have a set of 3400 upper and lower intakes with a 3400TB and 3400 fuel injectors and fuel rail from a 97 pontiac Transport. the intakes are already cut down so your rocker wont hit the runners thanks to me :D
u could also port your exhaust manifolds do a CAI
or if you have spare change port the intakes which would give you a nice gain!

am located in michigan
am selling my car
your intakes that u have on your 3100 right now are smaller then the 3400SFI intakes . thats one reason why they produce more power
3400 mini van 185hp
ur 3100 155 hp
if u do decide on doing the swamp i highly recommend you port the intakes

I’m also interested in converting my 1994 Grand Am SE (150,000mi). I was originally going to convert it to RWD and drop in a GM 350 I have sitting around the garage, but I’m not so sure now that I see how much work it will involve. I had striped out everything getting it ready for some body work and some new paint. It originally had the 2.3 SOHC, the crappiest motor they made. I want lots of horsepower and torque but I still want it to be street legal. What do you guys recommend? Im open to all kinds of crazy ideas, mainly due to the fact that i have too much time on my hands and access to the father-in-laws garage/machine shop. :D

I'll have some pics of my current progress later this week. there isnt a lot of rust on her body, considering she's 10 years old now.

Hey Spike, have you considered unbolting the engine sub-assembly and lifting the car off it? It might be easier then messing with the axels, mounts, etc.
