We have a 1995 Pontiac Grand AM. It started acting up about 2 weeks ago. Total loss of power. I talked to my brother (who worked as a mechanic for several years). He came and looked at the car. He found that #1 cylinder wasnt getting fire. His first suggestion was to replace the ingination coil. We did that with no diffenence. He had disconnected the injector, no difference. We switched the spark plug boots, again no difference. He then suggested that we get some injector cleaner. Did that, no difference. But the car did run. Just very rough because it was only running on 3 cylinders. The other day, the car just stopped. Quit!! Again my brother came and looked at the car. He is stumped. We have replaced the fuel filter, camshaft sensor, spark plugs. We have checked before the car quit running the compression and it was fine. Its getting fuel, gettig fire except at #1 cylinder but will not run. Turns over fine. Tries to start but wont. Also when we have this last trouble, before it stopped running, it did backfire. And while trying to get it to start, it has backfired too. Any suggestions??????
Thanks

Did you ever get an recall for your grand am. I use to drive a 95 GA back in March 99 to July 01 and I had problems with my car not starting up and I had an recall on my ignition column. Their was a couple times I had to call the tow trunk but after I would call them over to come pick up my car the stupid thing would start up:(

We just bought the car last year. Bought it from a used car lot. I'm looking for answers, and looking to not spend money on somthing the car doesnt need.

You say there's fuel, but how do you know, and is it at adequate pressure?
Try some 'starter fluid', the spray can stuff that is made for spraying into the air cleaner on very cold mornings.
I'll bet it starts and runs for a while, as long as you're spraying the stuff in.
That will confirm that you're not getting enough (ar any) fuel inot the cylinders.
Tho the backfre is troubling. A modern distributorless car with FI just should NOT backfire.
If it does, it's because the timeing is WAY off. It can only be way off if the crankshaft sensor is mis-installed, or the camshaft is out of timing (because of slipped/jumped timing chain/belt).
Good luck

If that baby has an ICM or ignition coil module, truck it down to autozone and have them test it. Its the module plugged in to the coilpacks under the housing. But mines a 92 and i had that problem, not sure if your car has to the coilpack/ICM system. the part is around 120 bucks also

Yes it does have the ICM and 2 coil packs. We replaced the one that controls cylinders 1 and 2. But it didnt change a thing. But it did run better after the change of spark plugs. IT ran for about 2 weeks and then jusst totally quit.

IIRC, one coil is for 1&4 and the other is 2&3.
