I think the problem with my car, is the CV Joint. (It makes a creaking sound while accelerating & turning) My car has 60,000 miles, and i'm wondering, does it maybe just have to be lubed or something? Also, should it be a bad CV Joint, how much are we talking to fix it? A ballpark figure, that i'd expect to pay at a mechanic.

I'm no mechanic either, so I could be competely wrong. Any other ideas what it may be, if it doesn't sound like it's the CV joint?

It's more of a clicking noise. When mine went it was only noticable during very slight acceration or maintaining the same speed.

hmm yea well i guess it sounds kind of like clicking, although it is quite loud and noticable.. how much was yours to fix?

I paid for parts only.
CV shaft - $59 (after core return)
GM "synchromesh" manual transmission fluid - $14

CV joints are encased in the molded black rubber 'bootie' on the end of the axle shaft.

The entire booty is filled with grease. There's no additional 'lubing' necessary or possible.
When the bootie tears, the grease rapidly runs out and you drive with a dry CV joint with a VERY short life.

For pricing, call a few local shops and get their estimates, parts & labor, and report back to us.
Be advised, many will try to sell you brakes, bushings, bearings, struts, etc. once they get the whell off. You may, or may not, need the additional stuff.

The CV joints that I've experienced as bad start with the 'clicking' that Matt describes, which progressed to 'clacking' and 'clunking' (louder versions of the original sound) before I got them repaired.
It is always very rythmic, click - click - click etc.

Rather than a bad CV joint, the sounds you hear may be the Strut Bearing Plate.
At the top of the spring/strut unit, where it attaches to the wheel well, is some sort of plate that distributes the weight to the three bolts that you see when looking in the engine bay.
This Strut Bearing Plate somehow shifts, breaks, or otherwise goes bad.
Makes a lot of noise but otherwise doesn't seem to cause handling or tire wear problems.
Replace it, or turn the stereo louder and drive 'til it really becomes noticable :D

I paid 260.00 to have the driveaxle ( including the CV joint) replaced. I also had them replace the transmission fluid and filter. Most places will want to replace the axle since it tends to be cheaper than putting together a cv joint.
