So, I'm driving to one of my finals today, about a 10 mile ride. While I'm on the highway, route 378 to be exact, my battery light comes on.

First thought in my mind: stereo is killing my voltage.

So I shut everything off, and wait for the battery light to go off. Nothing. Stays on. So I kill the A/C, and then the fan entirely, and open some windows.

Still the light stays on. So I call my mechanic, and he says to drive it down, and he'll look at it. Ok. I take my final, and drive over to his shop, with absolutely no accessories.

He hooks up the voltmeter dealy, and right away, it sits at 12. So I have a dead alternator.

He said that it was an aftermarket one to begin with, not original, some cheapo apparatus. He says he can fix it for something like $354 and some change.

$354 sounds a little high IMO. I'm sure you can get it done for less. Shop around. Hell, replace it yourself and save some bucks.

You should be able to get an alternator for about $150. Even if that included installation, it shouldn't be that high. Go to your local autoparts store and see how much a new alternator will be.

I only paid $169 for my 160a H.O. Alternator... and putting it in was soooo easy.

That sounds extremely high.

I had to have mine replaced shortly after I bought my car. It was just under $90 for a re-built alternator and installation. Came with a 1 year warranty. It's been working fine for 3 years, going on 4.

For real man... Sounds to me like you're about to get ripped off... Just go buy an alternator, then head over to East Stroudsburg and I'll help you install it! :D

Thanks for the votes of support guys...

But I couldn't drive to East Stroudsburg. Battery would die by then.

I'm not paying for it right off, so ****'em, that the last business he gets from me.

Even his gas is hella expensive, 1.919
