hey, i've got a 2000 Grand AM SE four door with a 2.4 litter engine and i wanna do an engine swap. i heard that i could swap it for a 3800 supercharged but i was wondering if anyone's done that and if not, if anyone could tell me what type of engine i should put in. thanks

best idea for this swap. Find a GTP that was in a huge rear end accident. Buy the whole car from the junkyard.
Think fabrication of mounts and placement of engine and tranny. I think it would also be cool to swap the guts of the dash to get the HUD setup too while you're at it.
It can be done, but be prepared to have your car down for quite awhile.
Here's my favorite alternative. For the price that you would be spending for a GTP swap.
Find yourself a 2.3L High Output quad 4. It's a bolt in for the most part. Better fitting all motor 180hp give or take depending on years. And do a search on j-body.org looking for a guy Johnny Mack. He can get you a custom wiring harness and computer setup using an Electromotive TEC3 engine management, which would be very trick. I'd do it if I wasn't doing something else already.
blah blah blah.. I got kicked out of a Pennywise show. BOO!

i was gonna see pennywise with social distortion and the casualties almost exactly a year ago, but we had a killer freak snow storm and they canceled... the bastards....

the gtp is the car the 3.8 supercharged motor came in originally. the hud is the heads up display. Your gauges

97-03 GTP motor has 240 HP and newer ones have 260 HP. Anything is possible, but you gotta know what you are doing and it will cost a lot. But IF you ever succeed, your car will be hell of a street machine.

ok, thanks. i'll make sure to update everyone on my progress
Or plop in a corvette motor and make it RWD ;)
You could also (for cheaper and easier swap) go to PACE performance (or a junkyard, or both) and get a 3400 motor. Replacement motors at PACE is around 2K for the 3400 but doesn't come with everything. This gives you the oppertunity to buy P&P stuff (TB, UIM, etc).
It's a direct fit, no fabbing. Once my bros camaro is done, my bro and I are gonna get a 3400 for his malibu (currently has a 2.4). Again, direct fit (1998 malibu).

i think if you're starting with the 2.4 the 3400 isn't exactly a direct swap.. the motor mounts aren't the same. the 3100 to 3400 is a "direct" swap.
most of the P&P aftermarket parts have a core charge - you'd be better off $$ wise to start with a salvage motor ( that you can find for less than half the price of a PACE motor ) and save yourself a few hundred smackeroos in core charges.
if you do a 3800 swap, you'll need to upgrade your brakes, reinforce your front end suspension, and AT LEAST get a tranny cooler.. the manual 2.4l tranny would bolt up but it's gearing wouldn't be the greatest match for a V6. the 4t40 would probably crap out on you..
forgive me for being skeptical, but if you don't even know what a gtp is, you probably shouldn't be attempting a 3800sc swap. it's doable; has been done in a handful of berettas and 2nd gen cavy's, i hear a shop in atlanta even did a GA, but it's a BIG project.
i agree with azenskid- you might be better off building a quad4. if you could add some forced induction to a Q4 you could run similar times with less heartache and much better fuel economy.
