No Gas Day
Steve writes in about No Gas Day
LET'S DO IT!
IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF GASOLINE FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES.
AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OF OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL COMPANIES.
THEREFORE WEDNESDAY MAY 19TH HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED "STICK IT TO THEM" DAY AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF GASOLINE THAT DAY.
THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT. WAITING ON THIS ADMIINSTRATION TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL IN PRICES THAT THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED TWO WEEKS AGO?
REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF GASOLINE GOING UP BUT AT THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING COMPANIES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH EFFECTS PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING MATERIALS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO!
WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY, WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.
SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND MAKE MAY 19TH A DAY THAT THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"
At our house 'No Gas Day' meant an entirely different thing.. but .. enough about me...
thanks...

it could work, but you would have to have advertiseing (commercials, webpage, ect...) and you would have to have to date a few moinths from now so theres time to spread the word. if it did work, i thing it would start a snowball affect

If absolutley everyone listened to the email, then it may cause some effect. But you'd be lucky if you even got .00005% of americans to play along. Everyone thinks you can change gas prices, you can't! Even if you did make the gas companies back up their stock piles, they would just have to boost production again when we all went to get gas on the 18th and 20th. A great thought, but it would never work.
I just got e-mail about this sort of thing. According to the one I got, one day boycotts don't work. It said that what is really effective is for everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY, pick one chain and DO NOT BUY ANY GAS FROM THEM at all. None. Ever. Until they lower their prices.
Here in Canada they suggest Petro Canada, partly because the federal government still has a 19% ownership stake. In the US you would have to come up with a chain, if there isn't already an e-mail campaign going around suggesting a target.

Exactly. For some reason I manage to get this email every year, yet it has been proven false years ago. :roll2:
This link is the exact text above.

Well, that shoots down the e-mail I got today. It is exactly the same as those in that link.
You know, I wondered about it, since the one I got said Petro Canada & Shell are one and the same. Seems they just replaced Exxon/Mobil from the American version.
Guess I'll stick with my plan. Just put in $20 in everyday driving, and only filling up when prices are as low as they will be, if I need to go any distance. May not make a difference, but it will feel like it to me.
Now as to price collusion and fixing. I don' t think there is any. Just co-incidence that every station here raises prices at 1 or 2 pm every Monday, letting prices fall during the week, then by 1 or 2 pm Friday they go up again, falling over the weekend. Nope, just the way the market 'corrects' itself.

That's one thing that's nice about PEI. Regulated gas prices. What does that mean? They can only increase/decrease gas prices 2X every month, unless there is a tax increase (Like we saw 2 months ago). It used to be that they could only raise/lower prices once a month, but since January they changed it to 2X.

Where I live, you know what they just did ... the Government in the infinite wisdom decided that to lessen gasoline price shock, the retailers have to give 2 days notice before raising their prices ... does anyone care to tell me what the hell difference that is going to make?!? ... big deal, they have to wait 2 days before increasing the price "as much as they want" ... they'll just announce 2 days prior to when they were intending on doing it anyway and they end up the same as they were before ... what the Government needs to do is to take half of their taxation off of it them the price would drop to 3/4 of where it is now ... sorry, end of rant!!

So $4.66 instead of the $2.33 I paid today? Time to buy an electric car!!

I've been paying an average of $1.94. Gas is 2x as much in Canada? Oh well, atleast I wouldn't be taking a hosing on health care. Plus they've got better beer up there!:D :thumbup2:
I've got a friend in Orange co. that said it's near $2.60 & climbing there.

Think of it this way... it costs me over $44 to fill the tank in the Grand Am.

My wife wants to head up that way in June. I guess I'll tank up here before I go up there. I get about 400 miles out of 15 gallons. So I figure I can get about 200 miles before I have to turn around and come back home to fill up again.
For what it's worth, the first time I bought gas and put it in my car. I payed .54 cents. I've been driven about 30 years.

Okay. Gas costs twice what it does here. What about health care? :)
sunrunner_pei

Health care is probably cheaper, but we also pay higher sales taxes and income taxes, on average. :(

It's funny how people always look for the quick fix, as long as it doesn't inconvenience their lives. It drives me nuts that people complain about the rising cost of gas when they themselves aren't willing to reduce their usage to try and help reduce the costs. That's really the best solution towards ultimately reducing gas prices... use less gas.

Funny how all these soccer moms & executives, etc. hafta have these big gas guzzling suv's & they then turn around & complain about gas prices? I'm not complaining about the prices myself. I'm just tired of the game. It didn't used to work this way. They raise & drop prices at random they need to figure where they need to be on price to make a good profit w/out rapeing us & keep it there! I'm so tired of this rediculous surging!

most people only drive when they have to.
I had to laugh a week or so ago when a guy on TeeVee was complaining about the $76 it cost him to fill his Hummer. Right, Pal! I feel sorry for you after you threw over $70 large or so on a useless, crappy vehicle for everyday driving for one person. NOT!
At least for the most of us, the GA is a reasonably thrifty car.

That's exactly what I was talkin bout. 70k on a big gas guzzler & then whineing about the gas prices.
