Ok well the car will maintain temp.. no prob when running the constant 55km or 35mph but when i come to a light and sit for over a min.. temp goes up. I discovered the electic fan isnt comming on at all.. even when the temp went way up. I heard that there is a sensor that is used for the rad fan.. and where would i locate it. I hear its on the block somewhere.. but if i could disconnect it.. and run power from the sensor I can see if my fan works. So has anyone had this prob.. and does this sound right.. because i dont wanna buy a new fan and find out its some cheap sensor. Any help is appreciated..

And btw i just bought my car.. yesturday 1994 Grand Am SE 3.1 V6 Auto.

Thx

Congrats on the new purchase!!!

You're correct that the fan is operated a sensor in the block.

The '94's have a computer operating system known as OBDI+ (OnBoard Diagnostics, Ist generation, enhanced).
The temp sensor may be integrated into the computer funcitioning of the entire vehicle, in which case don't screw with it; or,
it may be stand-alone control for the fan relay.
I'm not familiar enough with your model/year to say.

The fan motor may be fine, but the relay may be fried or disconnected.

BUT, unless the gage was into 220*F or more, the fan wouldn't come on anyway!!
220* is the top of the 'safe zone' on the gage.

thx :)

as for the temp i was hitting about 115 celcius which is about 262 degrees so it shouldve came on... but as your say the relay maybe fried... where is that located... assuming that all 3100 v6's are the same?

4? Hmm... purhaps the DRL option on the Canadian models have a relay for that.

You'll either have to trace wiring, or go by process of elimination. Looks like the wire from the PCM to the fan relays is dark green w/ white stripe. Here...
