View Full Version : Fuel Delivery - Starting problem

Having a problem with my daughter's 97 GA SE 2.4L.

Car was exhibiting the classic fuel pump problems of not starting after being warm. Gradually got worse to a point that it wouldn't start at all. (luckily, it decided to not start in my garage, in front of my workbench)

Anyway, after researching this board and some other sources, I finally decided to chase down the fuel system because the pump could not be heard running prior to cranking the engine. Bought a new pump, filter and relay and installed them all. - No luck at all. Pump still will not run. I seem to have power everywhere I need it, but the pump will not run.

I've tried resetting the ECM by disconnecting the battery for extended periods of time (both terminals). But, results are the same. No start.

Another odd thing I've noticed is the theft light is on, but isn't flashing. I tried leaving the switch turned to on for 30 minutes, but that hasn't helped either.

I'm running out of ideas..... And, I can't get the damn thing started to even take it to a dealer or somewhere else to have the codes read.

Anyone have thoughts or recommendations as to what might be the cause?

Thanks - KEN///

I think you have the dreaded 'passlock' problem. The key is the 'theft' light.

When the ignition switch senses somebody goofing with a wrong key, it disables the fuel pump circuit within the PCM (engine computer).
I think it happens sometimes when a key is very worn, or the ignition swich tumblers wear.

Do a search for 'Passlock', and follow the reset procedure.

Then, shoot the next Delco engineer you meet.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Rick - Haven't tred that yet, but will. We just tried to read the codes wiyth a scanner, couldn't get the car to communicate with the scanner. - Could it be ECM maybe???

could be but try the passlock reset proceedure first if that doesnt work then and only then proceed to checking the ecm....wires...etc ...
it really does sound like the passlock problem though

Passlock procedure didn't help. Left the key on for nearly an hour - light stayed on. No start.

Gonna try to jump out the fuel pump relay today. If that turns the pump on, I guess I'm looking at an ECM.

Thanks. - KEN///

Jumped out the relay. Pump still, won't run. Don't have any switch power.

Mine ended-up being a bad ignition switch plug. I also changed the switch while I was in there. (40 buck at NAPA)

You might try the detailed thread in the "Ask the old guys" forum. It's got all the gory details.

best of luck! - KEN///
