I have an 87 GA 2.3L dohc with a muncie getrag transmission and have been trying like hell to find the correct shifter cables for it ....never had the correct cables when i bought it ....i bought the thing with a burned clutch and replaced the broke cables(same part numbers) with new ones i got from the dealer but as it turns out these are for the muncie transmission which is slightly different ...(ie i think in length) so i have been breaking the darn things every so often and replacing them and am kinda tired of doin that ...
so does anyone here know where i can find both shifter cables (tried several chevy,gm,and pontiac dealers no luck they say use the regular muncie cables i show em that it wont work and the originals have a different partnumber on their diagram but those are discontinued by gm)....and i am not adverse to doin a mod of swapin out the shifter either if there is an aftermarket version that uses different cables....
i had the tranny rebuilt since one of the bushings inside came out ....the diferential/final drive when up in the air would spin one tire but the other tire did nothing ....instead of spinning the other way ...so i had it completely gone over and rebuilt as a preventative measure...even though it's one tough tranny ....
but now that its feexed and back together it still keeps breakin them darn cables at the end that is inside the engine compartment... i know the adjustment procedure backwards and fowards....and the shifter itself is a lil worn....but still it shouldnt be breakin em....
to me its seem as if the casing for the pushpull cable is too short and thus the cable flexes and breaks after a while....i have had ga's of the same years with worse slop that this one has ..... and all they needed was a readjustment on the cable ...but they had muncie transes not the getrag....
and so it sits in my drive for the last 6 months while i have been frantically looking for the cables that'll work...any ideas
oh and before i forget ... when i manually shift the linkage on top of the tranny its easy to do so its not the shift shaft binding either ie with the engine running and my buddy telling me when he hits the clutch ...a lil no hood fender surfing there :P

oh and by the way its the 1-2 cable that keeps breaking ...the other one only broke on me once due to my hard shifting and me not replacing that one when i put my clutch in after i bought the thing...but i ussually drive with a very easy hand so it dont break cables fast...or get them out of adjustment.cause i kniow how picky these things are if they get out of adjustment...

I have not seen what you are fighting.. but Guitar strings are pretty tuff. Might not be a way to hook them up.

just looking for ideas to help you. Lots of times there are already other things out there that will work. you just have to look at them in a different light.
