The Ecotec is 140hp the 2.4L that was in the 99-01 GA was 150 hp but I believe the ecotec is underated because I have passed and can keep up with the older grand ams as far as engine reliability the ecotec is one of the most reliable engines gm offers. there are performance things you can do to it pulleys arent really going to increase your hp that much on a stock engine

I think the engine is totally underrated, too. My Sunfire keeps up with many a more powerful car, and you cant beat the low end torque.

I gotta agree with you on that one Jay. I love the low end torque. I think what makes the huge difference though is the 5 speed. I remembe I test drove an auto cavy with the Eco, and all I had to say was eeeewwwwwwwww where is the power?? Luckily I wanted 5 speed to begin with. Eric is getting the hang of it too. He is doing really good considering this car is the first one he drives that is 5 speed.

I dont know. I dont think its just the 5 speed the 5 speed makes it a lot better and more enjoyable. But my car also beats a lot of cars it really shouldnt be able to. My car has an extra 200 or so pounds in the rear making up the stereo components and it still has amazing low end torque and speed for its size. One thing I have noticed about my transmision vs my dads older auto powred L200 is that my transmission will shift at redline or a little past it when I floor it. But then there are some times that it doesnt get up to speed fast at all like when there is a load on the engine (using the a/c)

With the length of the intake runners, it damn well better have great low-end torque. And it does. My gf could probably keep up with me (neon sohc atx). The 4-spd atx helps her there too. The grand am has much better gearing than my neon.
Sorry, all I can compare the grand am to is the neon.
