View Full Version : No GA's in junkyards?

Here in Sacramento, we are probably the junkyard capitol of the west coast. There are tons of car pick-n-pulls and recylcers everywhere.
I went to 5 different junkyards and auto recyclers this weekend to find a set of fog-light brackets for a 99+ GA. None of the junkyards had any 99+ GAs in stock. The only ones I saw were 2 97s and 1 91, and that was it. I went to 3 dedicated Pontiac recyclers and was told they have not seen a 99+ GA in several months as well as older models.
My question is: with the thousands that are running around, they have to be getting into accidents. If not, where are they going to then?

Auto "recyclers"
There's much more money to be had from used parts from late models. Very few actually trickle into junkyards.
The largest junkyard in the world is in Hazleton, PA... I've only ever seen 1 99+ GA... and it was only the rear half with no useful parts.
Once the late models are no longer current, then add 3-5 years, you'll see them in junkyards. For example... the 92-95's are plentyful in junkyards, but just a few years ago there were alot less, yet tons of 89-91.

ive been fishing thru junkyards for months waiting on a 2.3ho or a 99+ ga/alero to roll in, plenty of 2.3 non ho's coming in and out and i got a week late on an alero that came in, everything i needed was allready torn out!
have yet to see a grand am in there, if i ever do i'll promptly be ripping every thing salvagable out to use for something =P

In 4 years of junkyard visits, I have only seen 1 HO... just this past week. Grabbed intake and exhaust manifolds.
Was a 90 Beretta GTZ. 240,000 miles. Looks like it threw a rod or 2. The hole in the oil pan was as big as my fist. Oil was everywhere.
What exactly are you looking for? Cause early LD2's have the same large intake and exhaust manifolds as the HO.

those beretta gtz's are cool. has anyone put one of the 2.3l h.o. engines in place of a 2.4l? and if so how much better is it?

Yes, I almost bought a 90 GTZ. I still wouldn't mind having one.
Some have, but I don't know if better is the right word. It depends what you want to do with it.... and honestly the 2.4 has nearly the same potential, and more aftermarket support.

Heh I have the same problem with my 98 blazer. I need to replace my driver mirror and can't find any. BUt my '90 GA SE there are donzens here in the local Pick a Parts. But of course when there are 12 in the lot all have already had the parts I'm looking for pulled (ex. this weekend trying to find a driver side window crank)

Sam is the owner. His junkyard is EXCLUSIVELY Grand Am's :)
And he's about 25 miles away :)

Most junkyards around here contain cars from about 1990 to 1995. Anything older gets crushed since the price of scrap steel is so high, but I don't know why there isn't many newer cars.

There is a pick and pull place around here is it called Bill's Bone Yard they have everything I have seen at least a couple dozens 99+ ga's there. The good thing is, is that on tuesday's they have 1/2 off parts for a few hours during the day.

They all get bought at auctions because it is such a common car on the road, therefore a decent demand for the parts. They tear them down and part them out making some good change on these things. Just think how much it is just to replace a damn headlight assembly. Give it a few more years and you will begin to see the last generation GA's in the yard too.

Well if anyone knows where I can get all the parts for a auto to manual swap please let me know. I just bought a 93 ho motor, tranny, and computer, but have an auto and I am going to do a tranny swap.
